On a different but related subject, it is perhaps ironic that on the day of the launch of the most complex Landrover product of all time, Landrover received this prestigious accolade:-

The new 90 looks a lot better without the weird ‘floating pillar’. This one has also been photoshopped to have body colour B and C pillars.

Can see the floating pillar models being collectables in the future. Because you have to be bat

crazy to order one with when you can get one without.

Here is another page from the 2002 edition of Land Rover's Working in the Wild. Note the sentence "KEEP IT SIMPLE". How things have changed.

Quite an achievement to bag 5 out of the top 11 places, and be the only manufacturer to get more than two places.

The New Defender is more complex than any of the five in the list.

I'm not really sure that has helped

HDC doesnt lock the wheels its reacts to a locked wheel by releasing the brakes AFTER increasing braking force on those wheels that have traction. Cheers

I don't subscribe to Which, does anyone have any a full copy of the article? It would be nice to be able to see beyond the headlines and understand a little more.

I also wonder if there is any bias in these types of surveys, with owners of more expensive vehicles having different expectations to those of lower priced ones.

What makes a car “unreliable”? Does it mean that the car has failed mechanically/ electronically or is it unreliable because, while still being drivable, it has to visit the dealership for stupid niggling things like In Control Touch Pro, keyless entry problems and poor quality assembly? To me a car is unreliable because you cannot drive it, there has been a string of mechanical problems, not because a piece of trim has fallen off or the entertainment system has failed to work as it should.
In the last 30 years and 11 Land Rover products I have only had one unreliable car - a 5 door Evoque SD4 that burned out DFP sensors about every 10 days, this after 9 months of faultless running and after a ZF software upgrade to the 9 speed auto’s ECU that was subsequently found to be the cause of the problems and made the car fall into limp home mode. LRA became regular visitors to my house and the car while not totally stranded was not safe to drive. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Agreed. It would be interesting to see more info about the types of ‘unreliability’ that have been included and also what the sample sizes were for each vehicle. How were the participants selected? There is always a danger of bias if the individuals have ‘self-selected’.

Having said all of that - I really hope that the new Defender will establish a reputation for reliability. It is clearly a very capable vehicle which is likely to be very desirable and a big commercial success if LR can move away from its historical reputation for unreliability (real or imagined). 2005 Defender 90 TD5
