Not sure if I agree with the teachers etc on strike today either .. we were ok but lots of hard working families had to take a days holiday to babysit the children whilst the teachers make a stand..

Which just re-enforces my view that schools are merely a state run child minding service for the masses Rolling Eyes Steve.

I think the public perception of teachers is pretty poor after this strike.

I know people that teach in private schools - they work like nutters because they are in a proper business. The many state school teachers I know (a cushy number down in Cornwall) just seem to moan, knock off at 3.30 on the dot and take very little interest in their work.

Sure that's not all teachers - many are excellent - but the last thing teachers need is their image being destroyed -after all, 1000s of hard working public sector people have lost their jobs. Teachers should feel grateful they still have one. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

It's about time public sector workers got into the real world. the private sector (which pays their wages) has been in the Censored for 3 years, pensions cut, salaries frozen or lowered. why are public sector workers immune from this? whinging Censored need to eat it like everyone else has to.

Being quoted over £2400 for a new clutch on the Defender! Shocked

WTF?! I've just had a new clutch fitted under warranty. They initially thought it would be a clutch AND gearbox - estimated cost was still under £2k for both. You are being had big time - go somewhere else.

I have asked the dealer for the quote (with a breakdown of parts/labour etc) in writing. I couldn't believe it, since I think the right price is about £800.

Given that a genuine parts clutch kit is £250 or so, the only way to get the bill that high is if there is about 20 hours labour involved, and that can't be right for a clutch.

I am either being had, or they have cocked up the quote, I reckon.

I now know what has happened. The written estimate arrived today, and the price quoted includes fitting a *new* transfer box! This is the result of a communications breakdown between the customer (me) and the dealer; when the recall was carried out, one of the "advisories" the dealer gave me was that the transfer box was rather noisier than it should be. It is still quieter than many transfer boxes, so I am not bothered at this stage, and although I explained this to the service manager, somehow the cost of a replacement was included in estimate.

A t-box is £1237.41 + VAT, so knocking this off the bill makes the clutch £769.69 + VAT, which is about what I was expecting.

So at least the mystery has been resolved, and the dealer (with whom I have dealt for years and always been impressed) is 'cleared'.

Why should any of us "eat it", those who caused the mess should clean it up, the politicians, bankers and financiers, but oh no as usual its the working man who has to cough up. I have to agree, those teachers are lucky, I'm terrified what life will be like for me at 60 in 30 years time, we can't afford a pension, can't get a mortgage, bills going up and up all the time...sometimes feel like just "getting off the world" but you can't, you'r in the meat grinder no matter what.

Had a good one today, insurance payment (monthly payment) went out, it was double what it should have been, leving me with no money in that account, checked the letter - cover letter says initial sum is one figure, small print on another sheet shows the bigger figure...complaint going in monday I think! At least my bank were helpful about it... 2011 110 USW

Whilst i would agree private schools (most arent a business actually - usually a charity)work the staff hard, to drive results for the kids which = better intakes and in turn more money. Private school teachers are just as bad (if not worse) than state schools (i should know my mom was a private school HOD until she retired). And the other thing you might not know, private schools pay more than the state schools, choose their students, have smaller classes, better equipment and a nicer environment. I should know i went to 2!

Sorry you are plainly wrong.

Firstly we work in and have friends in the private sector and you are painting a picture we havent seen.

Second, public sector workers in the main Eg the ones that work in your local council or the nurse or the home care workers arent well paid at all.

Third, most councils have been taking a large hammering for the last few years, the public sector hasnt had a cost of living rise in at least 3 years and isnt set to have one for another 18 months when its next reviewed. Granted some LA's pay some well - but less than the private sector. Granted Health pays well in senior areas such as SHA's up but that leads me on to four

Fourth, its the government and LONDON civil servants who are better paid (some very well paid) and whilst it stinks that the majority of public sector workers arent well paid and get grief because of the minority that are - why shouldnt people doing a days work get a fair days pay, its not the sector its the job that you do.

Fifth, if you want to see overpaid - look at the police; do you know the base salary for a constable, sergant, inspector, Chief Inspector, Supt, Chief Sup, ACC, Dept Chief Const, Chief Const? - some massive salaries, overtime, allowances etc there

Sixth, It wasnt the people or the public service that got the country into a mess (depending on how much of a mess you want to believe the liars we are in) it was the politicians and banks

Seventh, We should stand together about a better quality and standard of living for all - not let the government win in the clever way of turning public and private sectors against each other - thats childish and immature...just like when i wind my friends that are teacher up for having there 5 months OFF a year!!!!!! (yes thats right we pay them an annual salary for about 8 months work

Everyone deserves the right to work for a reasonable pay and the right to a good standard of living and quality of life. WE DO NOT LIVE TO WORK

That effin Fusion Pro Glide Challenge advert Banging Head

I hate how adverts can be so tacky and unrealistic... If I ever decided for some reason to have a shave at the gym, and in came a camera crew and an over acting douche showing me videos of razor blades I think I'd have to punch him.

Anyway...

Mike, and you think the answet to that is to go on strike? all that does is hurt the people they're there to look after/service, not the government. It hurts the economy since parents then have to take time off to look after kids because teachers dont go to school etc. and you may not have personally seen the issues in the private sector but they are there which I'm sure you are well aware. pay freezes, pay cuts, pension changes etc. why should the public sector be immune from that? the previous government (mainly brown) made such a Censored of the economy through overspending that no matter who was in power now would have had to do the same.

i was never really a fan of maggie thatcher, but she did have a great quote "the trouble with socialism is what do you end up with when you have spent all of the other peoples money?"

I think the idea was it would Censored off the parents etc so much that they too would join in the rage against the government. It comes down again to the fact that its not the public or private sector who should be "doing their bit" it should be those who caused the mess in the first place, the pay freezes etc should never have been implemented in the private sector, nevermind the public. All the while MPs still earn a fortune, we have mass youth unemployment etc etc - this could have been avoided to a large extent had we had decent governments for the past 15 years or so but we didn't. Written whilst on the train so I hope the snotty cow is looking over my shoulder as I type!!

People who take up two seats on the train by putting their bag/paper/whatever on the spare seat. This is okay on itself but when the train gets busy you'd expect them not to begrudge you a seat when you ask them to move their stuff so you can sit down.

Still must have been karma as she was putting on some makeup a moment ago and the train lurched to one side and she poked herself in the eye with her eye pencil thingy Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.
