I don't mind that they break and have faults but why is it so difficult to find all the bits you need from one supplier.

Just want to rebuild my swivels, redo the wheel bearings and replace the front brake pipes. Why does this require visiting 3 e-shops.

Yes I could go to Main Dealer but imagine the cost and even then there is no guarantee they will have all the bits! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

When is a van not a van?
So after 63 years my series one soft top is officially a van. This is the verdict of Essex County Council who now insist I book into limited time slots with other trade vehicles before I visit. The fact it has rear seats makes no difference. I have complained but fear the computer says no. Today the man said it does not have windows in the back so is a van. I said shall I roll them up, he said no as it will be a pickup truck. I said okay Ill take the roof off as how many vans and pickup trucks have 7 seats and no roof?

He was not impressed and nor was I

My local authority (Powys) insists that all Land Rovers i.e. SI SII SIIa SIII 90 110 Defender SWB or LWB need a licence to enter their Recycling Centres.

I use my Jeep Wrangler to take the recycling with no problems at all.

DVLA says 2 AXLE RIGID BODY

Its a 1958 88'' Series One 4x2 tilt. It has the original 2 man bench seats in the back with three in the front .

Clearly a van/pick up truck! 2010 XS USW

And yet they wonder why fly-tipping is on the increase!

I am not allowed to take my Defender to the tip, and can't even get a permit since it is not my only vehicle. Fortunately I can take my Disco2. I can't take any of my trailers since they are too big, anything bigger than a large wheelbarrow is not allowed.

Despite thus every time I go to the tip (which isn't very often) there seem to be vans, pick-ups, and huge trailers in abundance.

When i bought my 90 it had rear seats and windows and i never had a problem at the tip. I eventually removed the rear seats and changed the window sides for hardtop sides. The next time i went to the tip i was told the vehicle was a van and i needed a commercial licence. The wost bit was i was told this by the bloke in charge, i knew him, he knew me, and the vehicle, and knew it wasn't used as a commercial vehicle. A qiuck visit to the council offices got things sorted and on my next visit to the tip i was told, once again, that i needed a commercial licence. I refered them to to the bloke i spoke to at the council offices and i've had no problems since, although the bloke in charge of the tip was definitely not happy about it.

The tip here is very well organised (and probably has one of the best views of any municipal tip in the world). I have no problems using the DC or very long trailers. Even rented 3.5t tipper trucks. However, the tip is only open from 0830-1200 and 1430-1900 on weekdays, and 0900-1800 on Saturday. Meaning, if you plan to do some work in the garden over the weekend, you have to get the entire lot done, and to the tip, on a Saturday. Tough by any measure with a garden as large as ours.

Similarly, if you want to rent said 3.5t tipper, you can, but only for a full weekend, and only with collection by 1800 on a Friday and return no earlier than 0830 on Monday morning. Given my previous work hours were 0900-1900 and over thirty minutes from the rental place, it made it nigh on impossible.

And forget using your lunchtime to buy anything bar food (car parts, tools, paint, wood, etc) as everywhere is closed. As I used to be an estate agent, i couldn’t go down Saturdays and Sundays were closed as well. Bl**dy nightmare. And guess what? Means you do all your parts shopping on line and the locals who close over lunch miss out Rolling Eyes Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Tell me about it, everything here in Luxembourg is shut on a Sunday so you have to get any DIY or car bits on a Saturday, which is fine until you remember big brother has decided you can’t work on your car or house on a Sunday. So you spend all Saturday getting the bits then have to wait until the following Saturday to actually use them.

Post offices and anywhere else you may want to visit during the only time in the day you aren’t working, ie lunchtime, are shut so all the staff can have a 90 minute lunch break, all at the same time, for reasons.

Want to move house? well don’t expect to view properties at the weekend, can’t expect estate agents to be available outside of 9-5 ( apart from a 90 minute lunch break) weekdays can we.

No wonder Americans think Europeans are all a bunch of work shy layabouts who need saving from the Germans every so often.

Having said that I do love living here, everyone is friendly, and incredibly rich variety of nationalities, there no litter, anywhere, I mean zero, nada, not one bit. Theres almost no crime and the roads are incredible, no potholes anywhere. Snow gets cleared almost as it falls, and all public transport is free.

Having been an agent for 15 years, in London and then here in France, I quite like the idea of 9-5, weekdays only. Too many Saturdays, evenings after everyone else has ‘finished for the day’, bank holidays and even Sundays lost. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Thank you MBD. Been busy. And lost a little DC mojo whilst it sat in workshops for close to three months. Now she’s on the road, and annoying me, again Big Cry Rolling with laughter Monsieur Le Grenadier
