A dodgy, or "on its way out" MAF meter can cause a lot of smoking.

The MAF is new (and the replacement part is an original LR part) and there is no oil in the ECU plug. The injector harness has been changed. The EGR valve has also been eliminated

My Td5 has always smoked since it's remap.
Have got a new remap today and no more smoke, but still got all the poke. So possibly yours has a basic remap. Ask Garry at Alive, he will be able to tell you what you have got. If you are saying it goes well, it must have some thing, but this may not be a good thing, unless done properly. Andy |

Might be an idea to check the turbo. Very similar symptons to a turbo with seals that are on their way out.

If you use the Nanocom software (you can download it from their site) it comes with all the standard tune files for defender/disco Td5 for Europe, UK, Japan and RoW |

Yes, I'll do that too. How do I check the seals? Wouldnt the engine use engine oil if the seals are shot? I found out that the PC software that came with my nanocom actually contained different stock map files so I uploaded a stock map for a defender 90" ROW NNN500020 ECU. My ECU originally contained a map for a 110" Defender NNN500020 ECU even as my ECU has this number nnw501290 so I guess it must have been changed at some point. After the upload the defender lost a little bottomend and maybe a little on the topend, but not much. Maximum turbo pressure seems not to go over 1.05 bar now It still smoked on startup (very black smoke). I did'nt see much smoke while driving but I'm not sure that it helped as I did not test drive it for long. |

Thanks for that, I overlooked your post yesterday. Will there be any advantages with a newer map as my defender is from 2005 and the nanocom files are from 2002? After a longer drive today I can see that 90% of the smoke is gone. It only smokes a little now when its really pulling at low rpm. No big clouds of black smoke between gearshift anymore. ...the downside is that it probably has lost 30% power |

Sounds like you have found the fault but to check a turbo over: 1. Take off the inlet pipe (from Air box), check: a. All the blades are present and intact. b. Give the center ring a wiggle. A little movement is OK. 2. Take off the exit pipe (to intercooler), check: a. For oil. There is a chance that there will be a little but lots id bad. Now all you need is a good reliable map Glyn |

Thanks, that's a great offer But I'm not sure that I actually got the read map, I downloaded the original (old) map two times (with different file names) before uploading the stock one from the nanocom map wizard, but when I plugged the SD-card into the computer I only got one file named 'TD5ENG.BIN' size 128 Kbytes? I was expecting a .map file. I've uploaded the file to a free upload site at this address http://gratisupload.dk/vis/62913/ (click the yellow box 'DOWNLOAD FIL') Here is the info from the nanocom (the original old 'smoking' map) Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |
