I posted this on the same topic under another heading.
The only way that Land Rover could be "persuaded" to address this issue is if during the press briefing for the launch for the "new Defender" the Solihull man expounds on the advantages of the new front suspension system over the old fashioned live beam axle championed by Land Rover on the previous model i.e. existing model.
If a journalist then quips "Then that will do away with the dangerous fault in the old live beam axle with the axle flange welding issue."
Land Rover would not want their launch to be tainted with such an issue.
Now if you could get a journalist to contact Land Rover before the launch and raising this issue, they might address it to stop it rearing it's ugly head at the launch of the new model....if it ever materialises

I think that Solihull will have to be shamed into a recall. I did get a letter from Solihull about getting brackets fitted to my 11 Puma, but didn't get a recall for the 08 Puma. I got the brackets fitted to the 11 Puma but I assumed that the axle on the 08 was fine. Now I am not so sure. It is not in the VIN range but neither was the 90 in this post.
Do the residents of Buckingham Palace not have the odd Defender? Wonder if they got an axle change or a couple of brackets?

One of the problems with complaints is what value companies and their PR teams place on old school customer service (letter, email, phone) and modern customer service (FB and Twitter). I spent three months through old channels trying to resolve an issue with my mobile phone provider here in France, to no avail. So I set up a Twitter account, purged about the problem on the open, global forum that Twitter offers, and tah-dah, issue resolved the same day. With the average genuine Defender owner, (and by genuine I mean, knowledgeable, a little obsessive, understands the history, uses the Defender properly, likes tinkering, probably has a 'keeper' so unlikely to upgrade every three years etc as opposed to a London Fashionista in his rarely used Kahn), likely being any one of (all) the following: Male, middle aged, white, undefined class, undefined politics, not a fashion follower, possibly not a fan of the McGovern direction LR is taking, small in perctage terms of future buying numbers, and last but not least a technophobe, we're both unlikely to have a Twitter account or even if we did, fit a demographic of complainant that the PR team would worry about. Someone on here who has account could possibly give it a go, but I don't expect we'll see many taking up the challenge. Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

if that Mr Newton hadn't 'invented' gravity we probably wouldn't be talking about axle failures. Rolling with laughter

To mister Catherham..Touche!!! Thumbs Up
Regarding Grenadier's post. Thumbs Up I fit your profile but as I don't own a mobile phone, do Twitter or have a Facebook account I cannot set this technological attack in action. Good idea though.
Now this is interesting. It is from the Disco 3 forum here. It seems that there is an inbuilt problem with the TDV6 3 litre engine leading to catastrophic failure even with low milages. In the U.K. Land Rover has adopted it's usual stance but in Korea they have issued a recall for the same problem. The interesting thing is that the U.K and Korean engines are made in the same place. Anyway it makes for interesting reading.

Another point. When Toyota or Ford et al issue a recall it can involve millions of cars. This issue with Land Rover would be a miniscule fraction of those figures so I cannot understand their reticence in dealing with it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I do not understand Land Rover and their policy : they sell poor quality and do not feel responsible. Shame on them.

A few other companies do their best to offer good quality spare parts, solving JLR's quality issues. They're making good money from JLR's poor quality Thumbs Up

I've already switched to an Ashcroft output shaft : https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/m...t-kit.html
No issues so far ... Thumbs Up

Is there a company providing a good solution for the front axle issue ? Cow

Would it make sense to replace the front axle by a pre 2006 axle ?

I believe Britpart have just started selling a reinforced front axle, anything would be more reliable than the original ! My 2009 110 went on the weld a few months ago but out of recall. https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

I cannot understand how there can be a time limit on a faulty component. I had the brackets fitted but you would assume that if the weld failed it would still be honoured. The brackets do not solve the problem they are just added to hopefully lessen the disaster if it were to happen. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Absolutely Spudfan and just as bad is denying responsibility for any faulty vehicle that sits just outside of the recall .... like mine ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Anyway I had a look at the Britpart axle and it looks to be a more robust item for any Defender and not just a remedy for the dodgy welds. Can't find it listed at any suppliers yet or even a price for it. I would hazard a guess that it will not be cheap and then there is the removal of your own axle, stripping it, fitting the internals to the Britpart one then refitting it to the vehicle. But I suppose you know all about that end of things, Bluericky. Incidentally if this Britpart axle was available when you repaired yours would you have used it?
Strange state of affairs when we are even discussing replacing a genuine Land Rover item with a Britpart one. Rolling with laughter

There is no power on earth which would persuade me to fit a Britpart axle case!

I would sooner use a genuine one and reinforce it.

I was checking mine today (early 2007) and they looked ok.

It would be temptimg to DIY a welded reinforcement piece, but as a complete ignorant on welding science I am not sure if it is feasable to do it or further welding on the sides will worsen the situation?

Any ideas? Puma 110" SW

There'd be no problem at all reinforcing the case, but it would be best to get a competent welder to do it so that and welds have the correct preparation, adequate penetration, and don't distort the case.

I had a 3 yr old low mileage tdv6 snap its crank. Landrover just fobbed me off.then loads of them started doing it. Then the disco 4s and rr sports started doing the same. Now the same engine is in the disco 5.
