Clonkly noises
My father in laws 90 tdci makes a clonking noise. The noise happens when the clutch is depressed and you coast upto the junction.

Any ideas?

Hand brake incorrectly adjusted is common as well. So next time as you coast to a stop gently (i mean gently) with the button pressed in drag the hand brake and see if the noise disappears. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

I thought prop or handbrake. Was worried it might be clutch. I'll get him to try the handbrake.

Seems a common problem, on newish defenders with the handbrake shoes binding, once it has got a little warm. There are quite a few posts about this, and the symptoms sound exactly the same. Thumbs Up

Mines been doing that!
So far its had 3 rear diffs, a new handbrake drum, a new clutch, 2 rear half shafts and 2 new drive flanges.
Its almost cured!!!!!
When coasting pull the handbrake up slightly if you hear a machine gun style knocking the handbrake wants backing off a bit. Failing that the clutch seemed to be the main problem on mine.
