Why brake pads? Seems excessive.

Spare fuses and relays. For long trips to remote areas spare fuel pump and fuel filter.
For wading spare engine ECU - this can be preset, so it is possible just swap it, without any need for Nanocom or other diagnostics equipment. Air filter - for dusty areas ar for very wet weather/wading. Some fuel hoses and suitable clips for them - original plastic pipes for fuel and cooling water are getting brittle when old. Most important - RAVE in notebook of smartphone - in PDF files, there are lot of pictures, helpful in remote places garages. And just don't be afraid and run. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo  |

A Haynes manual. They are crap, but great for explaining to locals what the problem, or required part is.

The only sensor that will stop a Td5 running is the crank position sensor. I'd keep one of those handy

I carry spare belt, fuel pump, a couple of relays, wheel bearings, injector harness because I have a spare, track rod ends, spare rear half shafts when lanning, 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

These lists of spares seem excessive to me. Brake pads and wheel bearings maybe if youre going to the deepest darkest Morocco but not needed for a trip to Wales etc...
We drove to Barcelona last year for the Land Rover Party up through the Pryenees and back down. Only spares I toom where a set of rear shafts, drive flanges, fan belt, Nanocom, fuses, relays and a handfull of other bits. Didnt need any of it. That is until I jumped the 110 up a near vertical bank but that blew the CV. Had I not been a  I wouldnt have needed it. That said got a new CV there and repaired it good enough to get around and get back.
We go to Marquenterre each year as well for some pretty hard off roading. Never needed any spares there either (blew a diff once but it was on the way out anyway) Just look after your landy and give it proper care and attention. Spare ECU is massively ott as well. The ECUs are quite robust and you wont flood it unless youre sat in 2ft of water for longer than 10 mins. Ive been thru headlight depth in my 110 many times snd never had a drop in the ECU box. Crank sensor yes. They can ruin your day sharpish. Great taking a spare fuel pump but are you really going to drop the tank to change it? I've done a fuel pump in the depths of Wales. But I've made a easy access hatch in the floor of mine. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Am I the only one to carry spare bulbs, or is that too obvious?
Or do I carry spare bulbs because they're one of the few things I'm capable of changing?  |

Cheers for the replies. Some of the extra bits you've said I do have in the pack anyway - a pair of track rod ends, wheel bearings, generic bits. Pads, well I tend to take as I've had a couple rip off of the backing in the past. Plus they get pretty clogged and have been known to wear quickly in some situations like wet sandy boggy stuff.
My main thing was to ID what things are specific to a TD5 that I'll want to take with me. So really the Crank Sensor, belts, tensioner, idler. Whoever said a breakdown policy and a credit card - that's cheating eh! I like to drive myself home!
I know most of it is preventative maintenance... Which is what I've been doing for the last couple of months. But we are planning a decent trip through lower France, Pyrenees etc and I don't want to have a problem and wish I had a £20 part sitting in the boot! |

You can just disconnect the MAF sensor if you think it’s faulty, and the engine will run fine without it.

Watching this with interest as I’m heading down the bottom of France and northern Italy at the end of June.
Last year I only carried a drive belt and injector harness but I didn’t do any off roaring. I was planning on taking the same this time but with a spare fuel and air filter. I have thought about the fuel pump but as others said itd be a nightmare job with a full tank of diesel on a track. Interesting a few of you carry spare half shafts! Are they really that soft?! |
