Split Charge VSRs and Battery Types
I’ve read a lot on the internet about nearly every aspect of split charge systems, but I’m still not clear on one thing. There are many comments saying VSRs are great as long as both batteries are the same, but it is never clear what people mean by the same. And that if they aren’t “the same”, it can destroy the aux battery in short order.

Is that true and what does “the same” mean? Identical in every regard? Same capacity? Same chemistry?...

At the moment, my starter battery is a Varta LDF90 flooded lead acid dual purpose 90ah. The leisure battery I have to go in is a 120ah AGM dual purpose battery. If I hooked that up through a VSR will I have am effective and reliable system? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I think this is a myth. Split charging has been used in the caravan world for decades without issue and the batteries are never the same as the tow car. Darren

I agree with Anorak, my batteries are completely different and i've never had an issue with either.

I think a decent VSr is more important with the correct wiring and breaker in line between the 2 batteries.

That's good, some reassurance all will be well with my set up once it is in. Thumbs Up 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

If you connect batteries perm in parallel they need to be identical size/ah. If connected via a vsr so they are disconnected when alt is not charging it doesn't matter on size discrepancies. Cheers
