South Africa 2003 Defender 90 Td5 SW Alpine White
TD5 18P engine
I recently purchased a 2002 TD5 Defender 90. Manufactured in South Africa where I live. It has an 18P engine. I know that is not a common UK or EU engine designation, but was hoping someone could tell me whether or not that engine has EGR as standard. The only reason I ask is that I am overseas at the moment with no access to the car. I want to pick up an EGR blanking kit while I am in the UK but dont want to waste the cash if it was not fitted with EGR.

Never heard of 18p engine. 10 or 15 only.

Thoughts would be that if a 15 had egr then anything after would. But it’s not necessarily that straight forward with LR. Only good point is egr blank is cheap.

18P engine
Now that is very interesting. The VIN number has been confuring me. It is: SALLDVB772V847742

I am vey new to Land Rovers, but from the VIN number I understand the 8th letter in the sequence (7) to designate Discovery. Could it be that the South African manufactured Defenders used the Discovery engine?

Thanks for the replies by the way.

I've seen 16P... you sure there's not just some muck making the number hard to read?

Will have to check this out when I get back home, but odd that there is also a discrepancy with the VIN
Will post the answers here.

In the meantime, before I spend £80 on the EGR blanking kit (and hoses) would it be safe to assume it has EGR?

18Ps only exist in South africa.

10Ps were global and 15Ps were the replacement but in south africa the 18P replaced the 10P, so might be a local build or maybe some special adaptions. All i know is that it uses metal dowels. It might be special air filtration or coling gear perhaps?

Some BMWs in SA have sumps with cooling fins on them. Lots of cars seem to omit EGR valves too.

19 - 24P also exist but seem to be a common LR Retrofit/Rebuild/Complete units for warranty work

Really curious. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

I have heard from a knowledgable person that the 18P motor does NOT come with EGR fitted.
If there are any raises on that, let us all know.

Nothing in Microcat. EGR level and emission directive it conforms to would typically be listed under minor features and spec codes respectively.

However, a few levels down in the EGR parts section, part applicability appears to indicate that is fully Euro 3 compliant, that is, cooled EGR etc. Take this with a pinch of salt though...

Thanks again to all those who responded with advice.

The 18P motor was produced in South Africa and was not fitted with EGR. Metal dowels were used during manufacture as for 15P
