The coil is used by the 10AS to tell the keyfob to send the de-immobilise code back to the 10AS.
You can run without a coil, but you have to press the "unlock" button on the fob just before you start. Do you have any illumination of the red alarm LED (under the rev counter) in the instrument pack when you have these non start problems? 4 turns then stop means the 10AS has allowed a start but the engine ECU doesn't (no fuel). No attempt to start with the key turned means the 10AS hasn't allowed a start (hasn't received de-immobilise code from fob). Some other things to try (fuses etc) here: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64972.html 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Check the engine ECU loom for damage/fraying/water - perhaps remove the ECU and check in the sockets too. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Could someone do me a favour, can anyone with a 2.4 confirm which relay numbers go in the yellow spaces here, a guy at the garage swapped 2 out to rule out the starter motor relay and I would like to put them back where they were now as its not that.
Click image to enlarge I have two relays ++07513 and ++08011 Thanks JD 2008 TDCi 2.4 XS CSW |

My 2.4 was a non-starter once, but after pulling out the main relais it was fine for a while. As the non-starting issue always came back, sooner or later, i was convinced this was not a relais issue. Then one day I twisted a bit the feet of the relais with pliers, no starting issues since. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

johnnyd now has his 90 back, and a smile on his face compared to the grimace last Saturday
After logging voltages going to the ECU and wiring up a temporary manual starter button the issue was traced to a failed ignition switch which was cutting the ignition power shortly after the key was turned to start. The ECU received power for just long enough to allow a few turns of the engine before it powered down and stopped fuelling and cut the starter relay. Or the engine would 'catch' before this, but the ECU power-down caused a 'cough' in fuelling but the engine would have enough momentum to keep running when it powered back up (just like turning the ignition off and on again quickly when running). Upon removal it also turns out the switch had also been wired up incorrectly when replaced as part of a key barrel/column lock change in the past. This was causing an odd power-down problem when the fan was running and the ignition switched off. Following a new switch and the terminals returning to the right places johnnyd now has the "AUX" position for the radio and heater fans restored as well Few other bits and bobs found and sorted at the same time and he went away a happy chappy 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |
