Rotary polished the marks out of the side panels,, that a recent trip to the Pyrenees had left

Serious clean (snow foam, general pressure wash, wheel and chequer plate scrub with Bilberry and brush) bit of a polish. Now spangly again.

Also did the other car; I find cleaning cars strangely therapeutic. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Well Yesterday,

Picked it up after the 2 day ( 8 day ) job , 2 days was what I was told when I said I would manage without a replacement car , 8 days was what it took and I was told two days in.

3 of a long list of things sorted some pending others we can't do anything and the usual " well it's a defender " , "they are hand built"

What ever happened to Hand Built being a sign of quality and attention to detail .

Anyway , phoned LR and told them the whole story , lets see if their customer service is any better.

Every hand built car I've seen has been fairly shoddy from TVRs to Astons, Morgans to LRs.

It certainly doesn't shout "quality" to me but it does shout "individuality" and "character."

The other car is MUCH MUCH better built than the Defender but the 110 kicks it's butt for character and owner "passion."

I've already had to treat and re-spray my rear cross member and tow hitch as well as sort the side runners out. And done some Hammeriting underneath. And Waxoyling. The 110 has also had to have a new clutch at 40k miles as well as a new heater circuit (I think!)

You know what? I actually enjoy the minor faffing. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

I think that is the Key , doing something constructive to your vehicle which you can feel a sense of pride over wins over chasing bad communication , disappointment and running back and forwards to dealers .

In some ways being out of warranty may not be such a bad thing , wonder what of the 32K is actually 3 year warranty but then again they probably have that re insured through another company.

Have to admit I was relieved ours is under warranty (albeit the less water tight Used Approved one) when the clutch went but I don't plan to extend it. "Insured warranties" are complete pap.

I did the spray bits myself because I wanted the job done properly! So far so good. It'll probably all peel and fall off now!

Noticed a wee bit of rust on one of the bonnet hinges tonight when washing it - another thing to sort out! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Stuck a GB sticker on the back panel to cover up the dent where the new Labrador misjudged the back door opening and smacked head first into the panel. I don't think he's the brightest spark in the pack Laughing Steve.

Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

Picked mine up after it's second service - £544 worse off !

Now got to book it back in for a weeks worth of bodywork repairs, warranty, but they are only replacing the rusty brackets holding the side steps on not the complete structure. Just purchased a set of Fire and Ice steps from eblag so there will be a set of standard 110 2 year old standard steps, plus new retaining brackets Rolling with laughter , appearing in the for sale section soon.

Sure is, split almost 50/50 on parts, oil etc. and labour.

Other halfs Porsche is in next week for a major service and not much change from £800 Big Cry , at least it only goes in every two years.

That's more than I paid for my D3 services.

I didn't buy the service plan cos it seemed a little steep well that and they were advertising it as interest free but I would actually be paying in advance for it wound me up a bit

I had my first service at a main dealer as it was a freebie. Second one at my local independent where I supplled the (genuine) parts and the oil (and I trust them, in fact I helped out with it). Cost was £70.

Over the last few days I've been playing around with a CB. The last time I had one was 20 years ago in a Mk III Escort and I've found out that I've forgot loads!

This time around I went for a handheld. Midland 42 to be exact. I went for this because I didn't want to fit an external aerial, although I wasn't expecting much performance from the rubber duck aerial on top of the rig when inside the Michael. However, the rig performed better than expected and I could get up to half a mile range, which was good enough for laning and having the handheld meant I could just fit the battery box, (one of two. One for re-chargables or one for alkaline) and jump in my Series 2a without worrying about aerials and mounts on both vehicles, (no roof on my 2a, so even better performance).

Anyway, I had an idea that I still had a mirror mount that was last used on my Yamaha Virago 535, although I never fitted a CB to the bike, and 15 minuets searching and there it was, so I thought I'd have a play.

With a couple of aerials, SWR meter and coax ordered off the web I set about fitting the mount and a 2' Thunderstick aerial to the rear left light guard as I didn't want to fit a gutter mount or drill holes.

The plan was to be a bit of a compromise in that the mount was to be fitted so that the 3/8" thread end was close to the body so that having the short stiff aerial, that the 2' Thunderstick is, was out of the way of getting knocked when green laning or off roading and that the mount was out of the way when loading and unloading stuff in the back.

However, this was asking too much of a compromise as I couldn't get the SWR down enough, even with two earth wires. One to the body and one to the rear cross member. Even when I turned the aeriel mount around and thus further away from the body, along with chopping down the aerial, the SWR was way, way too high. Not pleased with this I resorted to a Thunderpole Orbitor HD, which rather surprisingly doesn't flop about and hit the roof edge too much, along with slight chopping down of the aerial, meant I was getting at least 1 mile range with my flat and a hill in the way. A little more tweaking should see this improved, but as it is it's good enough for green laning trips, but for now the SWR is at an acceptable level.

I have a slight amount of interference from the alternator. Not much, but enough to be irritating, so I'm going to make up a new power lead in the next few days and will be connecting the rig direct to the battery, instead of using the cigar light plug. This should stop the interference, all being well.

Whilst I was messing with the aerial and mount I had a look inside my tow socket. Not ever having used it it was rather rusty and green. One job for the future. Then this afternoon I had a request from the brother in law to shift a trailler for the scouts in July, so that future job was started this evening. I can recommend Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber in an aerosole to get rid of most of the accumulated grime and indeed some of the corrosion. It's expensive at over £7 for a small aerosol, but it comes out with such force that it acts like a miniature jet wash. DON'T GET IT ON THE PAINT THOUGH! It'll take it straight off!!!

Final cleaning up of the contacts will be done in a few days time. It'll be nice to see how she performs pulling a fairly large and heavy trailler.

Dunsfold Collection Weekend!
Pretty wet and muddy at the Dunsfold weekend but made for more fun on the Land Experience off-road course. Always amazes me what a Defender can get through and not get stuck although the instructor said he had his work cut out today Shocked

Bumped into most of the forum guys that were going but for BPman. G4Sweeps motor gets my vote for best Defender Thumbs Up
