Optimill Quick Release Fitting
Yesterday i got my Quick Release Boss from Optimill 36 spline version, (No Photos of fitting as it was dark)

So last night i removed the old steering wheel and put the new boss on to the steering column and put the big nut back on but couldnt tighten the big nut up............. my question is how do you tighten the big nut back up to the correct torque as the nut is such a snug fit inside the hub no socket will fit onto the nut. Do i need to buy a smaller nut? 1995 Land Rover Discovery 300tdi - Sold

I fitted one a couple of weeks ago without issue, I think I used a 22. Used the same nut that I look off.

I have never had a problem fitting a socket on the nut. It may be that your socket is too thick-walled (cheaper sockets are often have a larger outside diameter than higher quality ones).

If you really can't find a socket that fits, then consider buying a box spanner of the right size. These are generally much thinner-walled, something like the link below but check the size of course.

I really wouldn't advise trying to change the nut, and you may well find that it is not a common thread on the top of the column.

Unless someone's changed the nut already, to something non-standard? I know I didn't have any issue at all fitting mine.

If I remember correctly, mine was a 24, and it was a snug fit, but a long socket fit just right.. I did mine hand tight plus a 1/4 turn Regards

What age is your vehicle?

Your nut is clearly a different size to to that on my 2007 Puma:-

In the parts list, this nut (for a 2007 vehicle such as mine) is described as "NUT - HEX., 14MM, METRIC", part number QYH500130.

If it is a standard M14 (ISO 4032 coarse series) nut, the AF dimension is 21mm. I do not have a 21mm socket with me, but I can say that a 22mm socket is a slightly loose fit and a 20mm socket won't fit, so it would appear that it is most probably a standard M14 nut.

Prior to chassis (V) MA962814 this nut is "NUT - HEX., UNF, IMPERIAL, '1/2"', STEERING WHEEL" part number CRC2015.

A 1/2 UNF nut to SAE-5 B18.2.2 will have an AF size of 3/4" (19.05 mm), which is clearly smaller than an M14.

So on the fact of things you seem to have a non-standard nut on your column!

My 90 is a 1989 model...... so am guessing it is probably going to be an imperial sized nut and just found online a PDF parts list for a 1987 year 90 which says the part code is CRC2015.

Looking at yours i am going to agree mine is a non standard nut (even though yours is a 2007 it still has room to get a socket around it Rolling with laughter ) 1995 Land Rover Discovery 300tdi - Sold

Fitted one last week. Standard 22mm socket set fit perfectly.
Mine is a 2.2 puma. Not that it helps, but you have one whopper nut!

Well the mystery continues, ordered a new nut CRC2015 which is specified on the PDF parts list i found and also what Blackwolf put in his post.... It arrived today put it on the steering column and its exactly the same size as the one that was already on in the above photos. Got a socket out to check the sie and its a 27mm socket that fits the nut.

Any ideas?

Just checked the QR boss I fitted a couple of weeks ago. I used a standard 22mm AF socket, definitely not thin walled.

A standard M14 nut should have a cross flat dimension of 20.67 to 21.0mm. Can you not locate a M14 nut locally and try that? Defender 90XS SW
