Nanocom - upgrade or replace
Hi all

A bit of lurker on the forum having only purchased my Defender in the middle of last year, and having found most of my answers with the search tool!

Prior to getting the Defender I had a Discovery 2 (nice car, appalling auto box, failing chassis) and needed a Nanocom to get any meaningful diagnostic data. It also meant I could program up second hand key fobs, and maintain and service the air suspension

Now I have a Puma spec´d car I´m questioning the value of keeping it. It looks like I need to buy another 2 unlock codes at £50 each to get access to everything; or I could just sell it on and get an OBDII dongle and some software, and some other goodies, with the money

Has anyone views on whether the Nanocom is really worth it for our vehicles?

Upgrade - OBDII dongles are good for reading some fault codes, but Nanocom is much better to accessing all parts of ECUs, not only reading fault codes. Funkctions like setting parameters of alarm, bleeding ABS, checking ECU outputs, ... are possible with Nanocom, but normally not with OBDII dongles. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Definitely upgrade, I bought my Nanocom when I had a D3, then added the Td5 code for my Defender, (also works on D2,) and then added Freelander 2 when I got one.

As MadTom says, a Nanocom will do so much more than a generic reader which generally only reads standard engine ECU data.

Nanocom is designed to access all modules of the car in question, many of which are very to specific to the model.

It´s the FORScan thread that´s got me questioning things - it seems to offer a few things the Nanocom can´t but these are engine based, so I guess I´m just trying to get a better handle on what the Nanocom is bringing to the party that is needed by me.

The only thing ForScan won't do is the 10AS alarm/immobiliser unit.

This could be a big deal to you if you want to program keys etc.

For the sake of £10 you could buy the correct adapter on eBay and try ForScan for yourself 👍🏼 Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon
Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition)

Why will you take a decision for only one of them if you can have both of them ?

Because in theory I could sell it, use the money to get a double DIN android head unit, then get forscan for Android and put in on the head unit. Very Happy
