What does the best system help if it is mounted in a empty beer can? Whatever system to be installed I would first put insulation in the entire car and then behind the speakers. At least to put something behind the speakers already improves whatever comes installed.

I only have the 110 so I needed to improve the sound. Put in new sony head unit and fitted sub. But now I am working on sound proofing. I think soundproofing is where you need to start. I've got to the stage now where people can hear me on the Bluetooth. That was just doing the under bonnet kit. Will be fitting rear very soon.

Clarion made the SVX and unless they have changed supplier and my lack of interest didnt notice, it is/was Alpine.

Although i understand another change is coming for some of the other systems.

I found the 90's stereo fine, i did upgrade the rear speakers because i had a pair in the garage - these were good addition, the head unit probably would have improved it a little more...but it was that bad.

Ok it wasnt the HC Logic 7 surround system in the sport Rolling with laughter but it does the job Mike

I don't know, but suspect it is some leftover found upon cleaning the floor of a dark warehouse in the middle of doomstown. It is pretty basic, so I think no manufacturer would be proud to put its sticker on it.

What more do you want from a stereo?

The whole of the defender could be classed as a bit basic! Mike

Apart from some silly special editions Defenders have always been aimed at the utility end of the vehicle scale*, a vehicle who's basic design rightly or wrongly has not changed since the days when they were aimed squarely at the agricultural, military and commercial markets. Like other things that fall into the driver comfort category the standard XS sound system falls into the 'just about acceptable' bracket, it does the job and no more. Makes me laugh when I see people expecting car like comforts and sound system in what is still not much more than a pretty basic tractor.

My SVX has a Clarion middle class system with clarion speakers and subwoofer and it's not very effective when the car is running. The surrounding noise is so much that the music doent exist. This car is not a concert hall. I think if I upgrade speakers, power, cables or isolation the result would be the same...same noise. IMHO its not worth to invest just a cent trying to get HQ acoustic experiences.

Speakers on the front doors is a big improvement + on top tweeters. I would say 90% better than the OE setting. As for the rear, not sure yet how to. Puma 110" SW

Very handy for drowning out the transmission noises.... 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Have just had installed a Pioneer DEH/ Bluetooth etc - iPod/ iPhone integrates brilliantly and a real improvement in sound over the OE head unit. Will upgrade speakers shortly and no doubt it'll sound a lot better again. As others have said, I'm not too worried about a fancy system in a Defender - but driving to Wales this weekend was certainly more pleasant with the new head unit Wink Simon

I have a Pioneer headunit linked up to a six cd changer in the 200 tdi. The cd changer is fitted in the cubby box. Been in it for years and is a truly good setup. The cds never skip and the radio reception is pretty good. It also has a cassette tape function-remember those? I keep on meaning to change this setup over to the Puma but the thoughts of taking out the dash and putting it back in without any rattles coming into play afterwards always put me off. At the last service the dealer upgraded the Puma System to the one with the mp3 facility at no cost. The troops love this. They tell me I need to get an mp3 player but I know that if I give in on this they will want me to get a mobile phone next. Anyway I am perfectly content to listen to my music as it should be heard-on vinyl of course. Hard to teach an old dog new, or indeed any tricks. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I fitted the Alpine 113, new alpine 4'' speakers and the Alpine sub mounted behind the center cubby facing backwards.

NOW the sound is goooooood. And it drowns out any rattles!
