So is the XS system slightly upgraded?
It's certainly nothing special but it's not tooooo bad for a Defender. And I was surprised it has an AUX plug so I can stick any music player into it. Shame the rear speaker cover (one of them) has corroded slightly - sorted with Hammerite as is half our 110! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

Exactly the same setup as mine - the sub and bracket etc look like they were made for the puma... I do get some strange noises from the sub when bass is high though, almost as if there is a rattle in the sub? Great all round system though for sound, not too loud and boy racer, but clear quality sound, parrot kit included and iPod/iPhone connector too that charges and can be controlled by stereo. Very impressed. James |

Finally got around to fitting the In Phase USW10, which fits like a glove to the back of the Centre cubby.
The great thing is no brackets are visible, because is mounts through the cubby so the brackets are inside. Almost looks like it was made to fit! Oh, and the sound is soooooo much better! Having recently been given a company car with an excellent stereo sound quality and a Parrot Hands Free kit, it made me realise (after 3 years needless to say) how inadequate my Defender sound system was. Decided after much internet surfing, discussion with my local Automotive Sound Supplier for a combination of these to give me much better sound quality, and hands free on the multitude of mobiles in my household to boot! Was leaning towards Alpine or Kenwood but this had just arrived and immediately caught my eye!
Will see how it is, and then possibly look at the addition of a subwoofer if required. The amp has to be reconfigured by removal of the Alpine connector....Other than that just plug and play (fingers crossed). Liked the simplicity of the look without a multitude of buttons, knobs and lights that would take me years to figure out their functionality because as a typical male "Who needs or reads instructions?" Not me! Parrot Asteroid...has an inbuilt graphic equaliser with a good range of frequency adjustments... Alpine Slimline Amp...As the Asteroid has no CD drive and is subsequently not as deep as conventional units am hoping to fit the amp behind the head unit if there's enough room..'Should be' I'm told. K9F,
there is space in the centre dash to fit the amp but it is dependant on the size of the amp as there is a metal locator bracket for the fitment of the OEM radio. However there should be enough room to the left of the radio for fitting and if not there is always behind either of the front two speakers. I fitted a new TomTom wired power pack and an Alpine bluetooth unit behind the drivers speaker with space to spare. I will be going down the same road with a small amp unit and will fit it in behind the passenger speaker area as it offers direct access to the head unit. Brian. |

Thanks Lorryman for the heads up, passenger speaker will be the avenue I'll head if plan A is not fruitful!
I am relying on the fact the Asteroid is only 2/3 of the depth of a conventional unit and this: "The KTP-445 fits behind the head unit in the dash of most vehicles. It's small and compact at only 7" x 2-1/2" x 1-3/8". With a 90 every available square centimetre of space is a valuable commodity and should be used sparingly. MG, I don't have pics but I was considering fitting the snooper satnav/radio combo instead of the Alpine head unit to ease the clutter up top. Before I bought it my mate had one of those ripspeed dvd combo player thingy ma jobs with the flip out screen which I borrowed to see what the viewing angle would be like as the dash is pretty close to you compared to other vehicles. The result was me having to put my head more to the centre of the vehicle to allow a clear view of the screen. I couldn't get along with the veiwing angle when I tried to view it when driving as you're driving position meant leaning on the cubby box at an angle so you could see the screen. Admittedly that could just have been that particular model (Halfords £300 jobby) and other manufacturers may offer a wider viewing angle or motorised side to side angle adjustment to allow a clearer view whilst driving. Also noticed that for the screen to tilt back far enough you couldn't mount it flush in the dash due to the recess of the dash. It would need a radio mounting spacer to bring it further out of the dash to allow the screen to tilt back enough and I thought that it wouldn't look right. So just opted for the Alpine unit instead, a lot less hassle to fit
Brian. |

^^Thanks Brian. Viewing angle and the amount of flip in a standard mounting was what I had in mind and was a it concerned about. I would like to de-clutter a bit and do away with the separate parrot and satnav units.

Must admit I was gutted that it didn't work for me, but at the same time relieved I hadn't spent £500 on the snooper first only to find out it's limitations and then having to make do with the annoying set up.

I have a rear-view camera that feeds a small colour monitor glued to the dash. Could this feed be fed to the Asteroid? -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Naks,
Excellent question and I do not have a 'Scooby Doo!' The Asteroid has two USB inputs and a 3.5mm jack but I do not know if it will accept a 'live' camera feed! Maybe BPMan being computer literate and 'knowledeable' and also having an Asteroid as well he may be able to help more than I can. Alternatively you could try asking your question direct....
