Service or Not?
MY2015 110XS is now out of warranty.
I bought it new and have had it Main Dealer Serviced since then, so that’s three expensive services and I’ve only clocked up about 6,000 miles total.
The MOT is due in April and I’d normally get it serviced but I’m thinking about no bothering as I’ve done less than 1,200 miles since the last one.
I’m not fussed about F.S.H. as I’ve absolutely no intention of ever selling it and to be honest I don’t think it made a big difference on my last three Defenders when it came to part exchanging them.
Your opinions please.

lets just say I change oil and filters on mine more frequently than I should, costs a fraction compared to taking it to LR. I've no intention of selling it and if I did I suspect the condition of the vehicle would say far more than a piece of paper.

I can't imagine how much I've saved over the years (8 years & 100k mile) but it would be significant. Thumbs Up

BobT - I'm in a similar position, 2015 90 XS with only 12,000 miles on the clock and now out of warranty. I've decided not to have it serviced when it reaches 4 years and will make a decision when it is 5 years old. That means it will have gone 2 years and 7,000 miles since its last dealer service.

I'm also keeping the vehicle so FSH is not so important. Also having traded in numerous cars of varying makes over the years I do not recall any salesman asking about FSH, they are more interested in model, spec and condition and mileage when offering a trade in price. Defender 90XS SW

Hi Bob, Me too. I had a chat with my local independent who keeps an eye on it ,does the MOT and generally I follow his advise.
Keeps the car in good order, gets a professional eye over it and saves a fortune compared with main agent prices.
I feel that irregular use has its downside and some stuff can deteriorate due to lack of use. We enjoy our 90" and think the indie route is the best for us with the peace of mind. 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

As a minimum I would change the engine oil / filter, and the fuel filter, using genuine OE filters or filters made by the OE supplier to LR.

Even though the mileage is low the oil can still get thinned by diesel, especially if you do shorter journeys where the engine isn't running at normal temperature for long periods.

And you have no control over the quality of the fuel you fill up with, so there could be water or other contaminants in the fuel tank.

If you do it yourself, neither are expensive or tricky jobs, especially as I think yours will have the screw on disposable type oil filter. ( the earlier replaceable element oil filters are also easy to change, but a bit more messy).

The fuel filter is on the chassis behind the driver's side rear wheel and is easy to get to if you remove the wheel. After opening the hinged metal mud deflection cover, give the area a good hose down to remove any trapped mud/dust.
Keep everything spotlessly clean and fill the replacement with clean diesel before fitting. It will then prime itself. I've replaced mine three times now and have never had a problem with air in the fuel system.

Do make sure you take it to the main dealer though for the annual paintwork/corrosion inspection to maintain the 6 year warranty.
They may charge you for this. (It cost me £25 or £30 each time IIRC).
Given the known issues with corrosion, this would be money well spent if you need repair work in the next 3 years.
I had a new windscreen frame and blocks, full roof respray due to corrosion around the alpine windows, and a new lower grille fitted last year towards the end of year 6.

Interesting comments, my local dealer has told me in the past few weeks that things like window blocks (and other bolt on items) are not included in the 6 year corrosion warranty but the window frame is... now waiting for approval from JLR and getting the job booked in.

Hi Bob. I do all the servicing myself now although it had FSH up to the warranty. I have extended the warranty through JLR
But really only to keep the LR assistance. I doubt the warranty is valid if I service it myself
But I do follow the schedules and carry out earlier oil changes or mid point 👍 2015 90 XS Santorini Black

The extended warranty is still valid provided service schedules are followed and any replacement parts are genuine LR.

For the corrosion warranty, it depends upon the type of corrosion rather than what it affects.

Sadly, much of this seems to be down to the dealers discretion.

I personally believe it's a false economy to skip the service, but by using a decent independent garage it also shouldn't break the bank. I don't think a yearly service and inspection is excessive, particularly as pointed out by an OP, the lack of use has its own degrading effects. It would be peace of mind for me.

Just my opinion, of course.

Hi. I think the terms of the warranty state that it has to be VAT registered business?? and of course using genuine parts. I will double check. But I do print off the correct servcie sheets from Topix (well i used to...I seem to have little access now for some reason?? - another issue to sort!) and complete them and take pictures of the parts used, receipts etc etc.... hopefully might be worth something or possibly just completely over the top! The first MoT and service on my 2014 110 van at the end of the LR warranty cost me £215 all in at my local garage in 2017. Last year it cost £416 but that included the brake fluid change and some other bits too. It would have been at around 24,000 miles I think. I only do around 6000 a year.

Personally, I'd definitely change the oil and filters, as suggested above, every year.

As to corrosion, well the one windscreen block I had changed under the original three year warranty is now rusting again a bit at five years old, but I didn't bother to keep the LR corrosion warranty going as Bilt Hamber's stuff is taking care of that for me nicely everywhere else.

I spoke to Shukers in Ludlow about getting some paintwork done under warranty, and they want to see the service history before they look at it. It doesn't need to be LR, but I assume they want some evidence of a service regime. I agree with the comments re getting it done by an indy, even if just oil and filter change (from memory the third service isn't much more than than anyway).

Mine is out of warranty next week and will not be going anywhere near a main dealer again. Had the first year service done there but at just under £900 for year two it went to a local independent at less than half the price. I will do year three myself and continue going forward.

Always change the engine oil & filter at 6k anyway and already changed all the other factory oils myself after 1000miles. Done 16k now.

Not worried about the paint warranty as no confidence in the main dealer not causing more problems if they had to do something. I have been fortunate that mine is watertight and having had Zagato work his magic from new I am confident that it will be more than 6years before problems appear.

Give the main dealer their due, I have no complaints with the two new swivel oil seals just replaced under warranty. They did not raise any issues and actually did the job without looking at them first, just took my word for it.

That's good to hear. My Heritage has never had a service at the main dealer, I've got a great independent who has looked after my various LRs for years.
