This isn't as off topic as the title might suggest.
I've been given a Disco 2 instrument cluster and have been researching the wiring diagrams to see what would be involved to run them in a defender. Luckily most of the functions are as per the defender (would have to run a disco 2 map to get the temperature gauge to function correctly) However some of the functions are canbus controlled, well in fact just 3 of the ones you'd need for a defender. That's the left and right direction indicator and the trailer indicator warning light. I haven't taken the cluster apart yet to see if it would be possible to drive the LEDs via resistors. I think it would be awesome to use Arduino or similar to control the canbus functions as there is also a built in speaker which would allow for a light on warning chime etc. So if anyone could shed some light on how I would go about finding the can protocol out and emulating it I would be very grateful 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

99% sure there's no canbus in the D2 dash pack - should be handy enough get indicator warning lights sorted - if it's any help I can post a link for a D2 wiring diagram and connector layout - have them for a Td5 defender too if needed

From the D2 electrical library,

And yes there's a built in speaker on the back of the D2 instruments - tho the chimes might be bcu controlled - the D2 wiring system is actually very simple

Thank you Jontd5 I have the defender layout diagram for the connectors but only the pin numbers for the D2 so that would be most useful 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

That's all my D2 and defender stuff, the fusebox and bcu work together to control indicators in a D2 - there's no replaceable flasher unit - there is a two relays in the fuse box , one for left and other right. What you are trying has been done before I think - so should be possible |

The control of these indicators is indeed a setrial bus, however I think it is a proprietary bus and not CanBus. Certainly the wiring on the vehicle does not conform to ISO 11898 (it is a single wire system rather than TP for starters) and I don't imagine that it is packet based. I have never seen a spec for this interface and i suspect that the only way to find out how it works would be to stick a logic analyser on it and see. Then of course there's the problem of how to emulate the BCU/IDM end of it. It is probably easier, all things considered, to modify the instrument pack to work in a more defenderish (ie prehistoric) manner! |

Thanks Blackwolf,
This is what I thought, not really what I wanted to do but as you say. Probably the easiest route 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

Decided to go for the KISS approach.
Cut the PCB tracks and soldered direct to the SMD LED. Got the trailer indicator light working so far.... 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

All working, and switches 12v+ to suit the defender loom
