Today I am Well chuffed! I found the leak in the footwell.
I had to strip out the carpets and bulkhead liner thing, at first it didn't look like there was anything obvious, it all looked sealed... Got my wife to shine a torch into the engine bay in several places and no obvious holes... Click image to enlarge So I got the hose on it whilst my wife was looking in the foot well 'found it' she yelled, 'it's pouring through!' she exclaimed. So I went and had a look, she took over the hose and started showering the windscreen. The water was pouring through 2 holes above the accelerator pedal. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge So I got some rtv Sealent that I had left over from when I added slickshift and plugged the holes with that. I'm currently waiting for it to dry so I can put all the liner and carpet back in.. Oooh the postman's just been!!! Delivered me some goodies!
But... The lights don't look right? Are they correct for my truck, I drive a 2004 td5 xs... These bulbs are for the dash board. I watched a video on changing the lights and the bulbs the guy had looked different... Could have been an older truck mind you.. So before I strip my dash down are these the right bulbs? Click image to enlarge I also got some interior lights. Click image to enlarge And my snow cowl arrived.. £40 on amazon - which didn't arrive, then found on ebay for £22. Click image to enlarge Will upload pics when all fitted 😁 Regards Adam Loving The Duchess The Defender 110 TD5 XS My Defender story - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64005.html |

Fixed the passenger side speaker - turned out to be a duff connection behind the radio.
Replace the high level brake light bulb Replaced the LED bulb for the temperature gauge Noticed rear number plate light had gone. On inspection, contacts are corroded so ordered an LED replacement Oh and replaced both headlight bulbs on the Focus - so a day of not seeing the light - but I am now! 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

In an attempt to find the oil leak on the drivers side of the engine, I got some Jizer, a garden sprayer and kettle of boiling water, Mixed the two up and sprayed on the engine. Followed by a hosing and then a wiping over with a cloth. Time will tell.
A bit more progress on the heater mirrors. Wiring into the mirror arms and mirror glass removed (this is a spare set I have) Cleaned rear window with auto glym glass polish, much better and scrapped a massive bird turd that had dried on the front window. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Well...About a week ago the dipped beam failed on both headlights. Full beam worked OK so did the side lights. Checked the bulbs, they were fine, checked the fuses, all fine, Did a search on the forum and the wider internet and read about similar problems with othe TDCI Defenders. Went on eBay bought a new headlight switch, dismantled the steering column shroud and plugged that in... nope that didn’t solve the problem, read a bit more, might be the indicator, fullbeam, horn switch, back on eBay....that didn’t sort the problem. I’m now starting to think of all the serious (and expensive) garage costs to get this repaired. Reluctantly I phoned the local independent but they couldn’t fit me in till late next week. Spoke to the main dealer again. Late next week.
Then a thought occurred to me. I have a boomslang loom fitted into my light system. I wonder..... I pulled the relay from the boomslang loom and bridged terminals 2 & 8 and joy of joys the dipped beams worked! A quick rummage in my goody bag for a spare relay and within seconds the problem solved! (It took longer to zip tie the relay back in place than sorting the problem) So from that experienced; The good - I managed to solve the problem myself without having to fork out to a garage. I’ve learnt from the experience. The bad - I’ve forked out for two replacements, that I didn’t need to. I’ve been stressing out all week and having to swap cars around all week with my wife so we can get the Defender home before it gets too dark. And that it was such a simple thing to fix, I wish I’d have thought of it earlier. You live and learn. |
