Would it be worth trying a ground from -ve on battery to the starter motor itself?

If that was damaged or lose in anyway would that explain why there is such low voltage when take a ground from the engine when measuring the voltage of the starter? Just seems odd to get 2v from taking a ground from the engine to getting 12.4v from the bulkhead ground

the neg go to the chassis to start with and then on to the transfer box, on driver side there braided cable link from chassis to the bulkhead if you problem with the cable or crimp lug at the transfer box end

As I said 4 pages ago, check you have a good earth to the gearbox/transfer box. If there is a poor connection then the resistance in the circuit will only show 2V. There is obviously a good connection to the starter so it is getting 12V but it's only getting a partial earth so showing 2 volts.
Try putting a jump lead between battery negative and the engine. I bet it will solve it 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

So gave it another go with the jump lead from -ve terminal to engine, at first didnt get anything (this could be down to my jump lead) but after a bit of a wiggle i managed to get all dash lights and could hear the fuel pump prime, it didnt start but it certainly was some way forward so pretty confident now its the ground/earthing thats at fault, will give it closer look at weekend

The TD5 starter requires a very strong connection to the battery to get the engine going as I've found out from personal experience.
Jump leads don't always transfer enough current, probably due to the croc clips |
