Hi,
Today with a suitable multi-meter the frequency measured on the white / black wire as connected to the connector of the rev counter. I have made a video and photos of it and will try to upload it. As I see it, correct me if I'm wrong, the problem must be in the rev counter and not in the connection or the signal, that does not come through. Will contact the supplier on Monday and try to find a solution. Gerard Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Is that voltage is the same as appears at pin 19 of the black ECU plug, (it needs to be measured with the engine running.)
In this configuration, your meter needs to be reading DC voltage. Do you have ABS on your Landy? If so, the voltage and waveform should be correct by virtue of the ABS module connection, If not, it suggests that the "pull-up" resistor in the tacho is not connected for some reason. |

Clive is there any chance you could pop the black rubber bung off the back of yours and see if the switches on the back of yours are configured the same as ours. Mine is 1,2 and 8 on. It would be nice if it was a fix as simple as a switch, you got lucky having the only one that works!

Hi Clive/Stefan,
Mine the same situation: 1,2 and 8 on. Yes, ABS on my Landy. What I have measured is what Stefan posted yesterday, namely 28 Hz with idling engine and increasing to 40 Hz in this case when the accelerator pedal is depressed a little. Do I understand now that I need to measure DC current instead of HZ? Cheers, Gerard. |

Watching this with interest as I wanted one. Mine is non abs, but I will be holding off till this is resolved. I hope you get it sorted 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Just opened mine up and the switches are set with 1,2 & 8 on as suggested above. Click image to enlarge >Gerard< Sorry I misread your previous comment, 28Hz is about right for idling. The point about measuring the DC voltage, (not current,) is to get an idea of the signal voltage amplitude if you don't have access to an oscilloscope. The signal is a square wave of 12 volts peak with a 50:50 ratio, IE switching between zero volts and 12 volts, 50% on & 50% off, measured with a dc voltmeter you will see 6 volts, the mean (average) voltage. If you're seeing this and the correct frequency at the tacho and the small multiplug wiring is correct as below, it suggests the tacho itself is faulty. Click image to enlarge |

I was wondering if any success has been had with the td5 rev counters from CAI
I have gone through the threads guys mine lights up, self checks and then nothing. Reading the posts it seems we all have the same problem, I'm struggling to measure the voltage at pin 19. |

Hi,
This morning I sent an e-mail to the supplier. I have described the situation and asked them if I can return the rev counter and if they want to test it. I have received an answer, I can send the rev counter back and they will test it. To be continued..... Gerard. |

Smiths don't seem to think the rev counter needs a pull up circuit and reckon you can measure the output with a meter from the ecu....

That's wrong I'm afraid, it does need a pull-up.
My Puma Gauge controllers wouldn't work otherwise 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Ughhhh how frustrating, how can I tell the manufacturer they're wrong . I think I'm leaning towards sending both the ones I ordered back to be tested too. I may well chase a refund on the second one as I bought it for a friend who would have been interested if it worked but it doesn't.
Just out of interest do any of the ecu boffins out there know if you can enable/disable the ecu output on pin 19? I find it odd how Clive's is working yet no one else's does. If they all didn't work you could say fine it's definitely the gauges but the fact one works makes it more of a mystery. |

Have you got any resistors? If not could send you one to prod in the connector and try? 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
