As I said earlier in the thread you can't read the voltage with a multimeter, you need a pull-up which is in the Rev counter's circuitry.
You can read it (or put a scope on it) with the rev counter connected as then the rev counter is pulling up the signal. If your multimeter has a frequency setting you can also try it (gauge connected still) but whether you get a reading depends what it's cutoff frequency of the meter is. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Hi guys just wondering if you can help and advise with my installation of my rev counter for my 2004 td5 defender. I'm getting 1.3 volts from pin 19 in the ecu I was told I should get 6 volts, the gauge is wired in as per instructions from CAI and it's doing a sweep with ignition on returning to zero and staying there with engine running.
Any help appreciated I did think my multimeter may not pick up the pulse but not sure now. Any help appreciated Cheers Paul |

Sounds like an issue with the rev counters themselves
Anyone local to any of you with a known working Td5 rev counter who could do a quick swap and test? I have one but a bit far to nip round to check 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

I'm beginning to wonder if the tachos in question are set up correctly, the instruction sheet indicates that there is an 8 way DIL switch inside to program it to the engine parameters, the sheet isn't specific about it but I wonder if one of those switches determines a pull-up on the input?

Genuine Td5 ones don't have any switches to configure.
Any photos of part number labels and/or the back of the counters people have received from CAI? Happy to compare against my genuine one. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

The instruction sheet says "... programmed via eight dil switches located beneath the grommet to the rear of the instrument ..."
I can whip mine out, (the tacho ) and take a picture if it helps. I should just add, mine worked straight away, "out of the box". |

When I messaged them I got this, I haven't had a chance to remove the rubber bung and play with the switches yet but gerrardtd5 told me he tried it and had no luck

Sounds a bit like CAI may have shipped standard diesel type counters with Td5 dials 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW Last edited by Martin on 16th Aug 2018 9:41am. Edited 1 time in total |

But if Clive's worked straight from there then that's not the case.
Unless our batch is different to Clive's?? |

Maybe mine was just set up correctly originally and missed on the others?
Anyway, here's the back of mine, (cropped from earlier picture,) I'll need to take the binnacle out to check the switches, that will have to wait for now I'm afraid. Click image to enlarge |
