Thanks to everyone that's responded so far, we now have info for 37 vehicles.
Some things are already starting to show a pattern.
More responses will improve the accuracy of any findings, please keep them coming. Thumbs Up

A few things that are standing out from our small sample:

Only 3 vehicles have reported the original shaft lasting longer than 100,000 miles. All early 2.4's from 2007 to 2009.

2.4's 66% of shafts have failed or have been changed.
Failure is generally between 50,000 and 90,000 miles.

2.2's 44% of shafts have failed or have been changed.
Failure is generally between 25,000 and 65,000 miles - so far.
Many will be newer low mileage vehicles, but they are definitely failing sooner.

yes
45000klms.....very respectfully driven (which obviously makes no difference to this issue)
The only "warning" we received was that about 3-4 klms before we lost all drive, we heard a loud "click" from somewhere, which we thought we'd check out when we got home, but we never got there. The "click" was obviously one or more of the splines breaking away, prior to total failure a few klms later.
Fitting the new shaft never made any noticeable difference to driveline slack that we had before failure.
Pickles.

Netherlands 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
1, 2007 (vehicle year of manufacture)
2, 2.4 (engine type 2.4 or 2.2)
3, N (is the Defender still running with the original output shaft? (Y/N))
4, 110.000 km (no failure!) (vehicle milage at first shaft failure, or current milage on the original shaft if still running).

If the shaft has previously failed, please answer 5 & 6.

5, Y (Has an Ashcroft modified part has been fitted? (Y/N))

Because I had the t-box out to inspect the shaft, I replaced with the Ashcroft kit (not necessary, see photo attached)
When the shaft came out, it was bone-dry and covered in red dust. Looked ok, no play in the coupling.

Has anyone replaced the shaft on the garage floor? What a pig of a job..... Smile

I'm aware that our 'sample size' is still low and it is far too early for conclusions, but patterns are emerging.
Any suggestions of things to look for or known trends in the failures, please mention it.

After the latest replies, and looking at the age of the vehicles, 3 typical distribution patterns are emerging for manufacturing years and failure mileage.

Most replies with failures of 2009 to 2011 vehicles happened between 50,000 and 70,000 miles.

Early failures can happen between 25,000 and 30,000 miles, starting with 2011 vehicles through to 2015.
Worryingly, this failure seems to repeat itself, 2 members report multiple failures at this frequency.

Then the 'frequency' of the chart stands out.
Different failure groups at 25-30K, 50-60K and 75-90K. That could be a step too far to make a theory yet.

What I would like is feedback on the Ashcroft shafts, how long have they lasted?
It would be good to prove one way or the other if they do last longer than the original.

Also the multiple failures, if you've had 2 or more please send the mileage of each failure.
Repeated failure at the same or similar miles would be very useful if we can prove it happens.

Cheers.
