When I was replacing the front crankshaft seal last week I was wondering about the issues you perfectly addressed.

When the TDCI came out, you couldn’t get your hands on the special tools, not cheaply anyway, so there was always a workaround! Wink


The timing chain that I took out was an aftermarket one, I’ve no idea how long it’s been fitted for? but only the chain, tensioner guide, and tensioner had been fitted,
The cam sprockets, and pump sprocket were genuine Ford,
As were the other guides.

I brought it with 86,000 miles on the clock, so who or why it was fitted I don’t know?
It’s now on 140,000, apart from very slightly worn cam sprockets there wasn’t much to worry about.

The kits that I fit (at work, and here) include every guide and bolts, tensioner, 2x cam sprockets, 1x pump sprocket, crank/oil pump sprocket, and the chain.

They cost around £200 If your going to do it, replace everything for piece of mind.
Timing pin kits are readily avalible for very little money.

Hi Ian,, please to here that you have the 90 running again, I am at the point where all things have been checked and the next step is to remove the head so this is where it is going to get expensive, again Big Cry I just hope to ... that something is found with the head gasket or head if not it could be a new engine. Just had a quote today back from LR a short motor $5.5k AUD or $12k AUD plus fitting. Big Cry Big Cry

My question is are all Duratec 2.2l equal, are the 2.2's in the Ford transit the exact same as in the Defenders. There is a company here in Oz selling 2.2 & 2.4 Duratec engines for $6k. Just clutching a straws now.

Funny thing was that it was bringing up #2 cylinder misfire.

Hi Daniel

That sounds like it’s an expensive repair Shocked

The basic blocks are the same, but it’s always worth a visual check to confirm it’s correct,
The sump will have to swapped, but not much else.

2.4 and 2.2 blocks are different, it’s not just bore size, you will find they have different bolt holes cast in the front,
And possibly more?

Earlier 2.4 duratorqs look similar, but are totally different.

I’m supprised at the prices you were given, Short engines are cheap here now, you can pick them up reconditioned for as little as £1000, a few years ago you couldn’t buy one for under £2000.
I’m not sure what the exchange rate is, so not sure what that works out to in £s?

I hope you have a positive outcome with yours, I would get the head tested and skimmed personally,
You may have read, the guy that did mine said the Ford blocks were practically bomb proof, and I have no reason to doubt him.

Unnecessary quote removed

I found with my engine that if you rotate it the timing mark on the chain will advance 1 tooth per 4 revolutions of the crank.

Did you have much water in the oil?

None just misfire and blow by into the crankcase.

What are the simptoms of your engine.
Mine will loose coolant out of the header tank/ bottle from the cap centing.
I have just purchased an Iveco cap that has an external drain hose.
I haven't fitted yet but will let you know the results was recommended by someone on AULRO

I couldn’t get my old chain to line up correctly?
I rotated it so many times I nearly passed out Rolling Eyes

Like you say, 4 turns on the new one, and it’s back to where it should be. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

I have not heard back from the guys in Clayton as yet. What would be the purpose of the Iveco cap and drain? wouldn't you still loos the same amount of coolant? What is really frustrating with mine is that it runs fine with no power loss just coolant loss. If it ran like a hairy goat I could understand it be it simply runs fine.
