Just what mine was doing, it was using coolant at an alarming rate, then it would eventually boil and go to limp mode, Once stopped it would throw all the coolant or what was left, back up into the bottle and out the cap. Once topped back up, and ticking over it would be fine for the next 5 or so miles, No pressure in the circuit, I still can’t work out where all the water was going? It was taking litres of coolant between stops, still running and towing great, With no visible Steam/vapour from tail pipe? I have a straight through exhaust with only a rear silencer (no CAT) I’ve now done over 100 miles since putting it back together, and it’s been fine, No coolant loss whatsoever. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Hi Ian
I am still working my way through the over pressure issue in the cooling system my new mech has not taken the head off as yet but has identified the hose around the back of the engine to the bottom of the overflow bottle has a 90 degree kink in it which may could be the cause of the lack of coolant flow. I will keep you posted on this. My question today is how do you get the cast iron pulley plate off the front of the motor, just got back from taking a look at my vehicle and I see there are 4 or 5 bolts which we have removed but there seems to be another bolt or stud coming from the side of the alternator. I need to replace the pulley which the fan sits on, the bearing is shot and I see in the last of your photos you have the plate pulled forward and it seems to be pivoting on the bolt from the alternator side. Is this a bolt or a stud? does the alternator need to come off to get at this bolt? Also what is the best way to replace the fan pulley. Thanks to anyone who replies Daniel |

I am away from mine at the moment but seem to remember something about the earlier models had a stud on one side.
Mine is 2013 I will be able to look on Monday if that helps. Not sure if they are replaceable individually or the whole unit as one, a Ford unit might be an option. |

You have to remove the alternator, and the water pump to access the two bolts either side of the front plate,
These are like hinges, so it swings down, after removing 3 other bolts on the front. It’s all a bit of a lash up to be honest! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Thanks Ian,
I think they may have forgot to put a bolt in on the water pump side as it just hangs by the alternator bolt once the front bolts are removed. Might have to replace the drive belt idlers and bracket as one unit (LR031367) do you know if they can be rebuilt or just replace as one unit? Thanks |

Hi Harold, Well the head has not as yet come off. Taking a look at the work which was done when the EGR failed the overflow pipe from the back of the engine to the expansion tank was kicked so the latest thinking is it could well be a coolant flow issue. I am just waiting for some uncoils to arrive from Adelaide and also hose connectors to remove the T pieces in the hose from the by pass work which was done by stuffing a steel rod in the hose and clamping it off. The hose work which was done to by pass the EGR was crap and the company here in Geelong should be truely ashamed of themselves. Not what you expect for $8.5K. I will keep you posted

Hi Dan,
Can't figure mine out it has started using about 500ml of coolant/ 250km. No sign of lost coolant. When vehicle is left for 12 hours while i'm at work and the coolant checked still has pressure in tank. I can only think that maybe the head bolts are stretching and letting coolant into the combustion chamber. I am going to try some head gasket sealant as I cant afford to have 2 Land Rovers off the road. Mark |

Hi Ian,
Jumping into 2021, there's still not much resources out there to show how this is done (other than a haynes manual). I've just bought my first defender and doing my research what I 'possibly' need to do to keep it running for a very long time. I'm only envious of your ability to do such things and if and when it gets to that point, hopefully I'll refer back to you article as a resource. Thanks again for sharing! |
