Bit more this morning,

Got all the pulleys out the way, and got the timing chain cover off,

I’ve noticed it’s not an original Cam chain, and guides, also on timing the engine up the marks were not lining up with the arrows on the cam shafts, or the high pressure pump?
They were one link out, not sure why it was done like that?
This would also explain why some of the cover bolts were quite loose, and a Ford part no sticker on the cover.

Anyway, all off and stripped, time to remove the cam carrier,
I gave mine a good look over, as they are prone to cracking around the bolt holes.
Luckily mine seems ok Wink

Next remove the 2 cam shafts.

Finally undo the head bolts and lift off.

Nothing sinister came to light, although I suspect No4 cylinder was the culprit, the combustion marks on the piston crown were quite different from the others, and the carbon build up was a lot darker, the head gasket seems to be ok?

I dropped of the head to a local firm, for a pressure test, and possibly head skim if it’s needed?
Should be back by Tuesday.

I came back and started to fit the new crank sprocket, cam chain and guides
can’t do much else now until I get the head back.

Hi Ian

I am following your story with interest as I have the very same problem with my 130 and at the crossroads as to what to do. Having spent $8.8k AUD on the repair after the EGR cooler failed and having replaced in the last week the split radiator water pump and thermostat I am at a loss as to what to do next. I have a few options, everyone who has looked at the problem have told me its another cracked head or head gasket, the repair is only 20k old.

If I take it back to the original repairer who are denying the head/gasket problem and they take the head off as you are doing and find that it is nothing to do with their original repair work then I will be in the position of having to pay again for their work and still have a stripped engine I have no confidence them anymore. I am thinking of a new engine and just keeping the original for parts and putting in a brand new one


What are you thinking with the No.4 cylinder?

Hi Daniel

It sounds like your having some bad luck with your Defender!

The most annoying thing is still not being able to pin point something for real?
Like I say, the combustion pattern on number 4 does not match the other 3 cylinders that well,
So I’m hoping the gasket failed around number 4 cyl, and my eyes can not see it!?

If the head comes back ok, I have no option other than refit it and keep my fingers crossed,
I will flush the block, rad, and martrix, and like you replace the thermostat and pump, just so I know it’s been done.
I am taking no chances with this, simply due to the amount of work involved stripping and refitting everything,
It’s not a great engine to work around in situ.

If I still have problems, then I would say it’s the block, in which case I would be looking at a short recon motor,
I do have a 160,000 mile spare engine, but I think the way to go would be reconditioned, then at least there is guarantee on the block.

I’m just glad I can sort this myself, I certainly wouldn’t want a garage bill for this repair in the U.K.!
My cost is around £350 at the moment, most of that being the cam chain kit.

I will certainly keep this thread going until I’ve found the cause, good luck with yours, and I hope you get it sorted soon?

Good news!

The head was ok with the pressure test, and no warping.

I have still insisted on a very light skim, and re cut the valve seats, just to be sure that I’ve done all I can!
Head kit came today, along with head bolts, rocker carrier bolts, water pump/thermostat, crank sensor, and all the gaskets.

I’m picking it up Thursday night, so all being well I hope to be up and running on Saturday. Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Fingers crossed I covered all bases on this one,
Hopefully I can report back on Saturday as being a success?

The annoying part is, I’ve found nothing really wrong with anything Big Cry
9 times out of 10 you can see the problem with H/G failure.

I would have preferred to have found something that stands out, but sadly in this case nothing!
The mating surface of the head had 2 tiny marks on it, (and they were tiny!) which is why I’ve decided to get it skimmed.

Anything after this would indicate the block to be the issue.... Rolling Eyes 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Hi Ian

Ok so the head is good but what are you going to do about cylinder 4? is that why you have has the valve seats ground? my 130 is still running ok just still loosing coolant from the overflow bottle cap. Should be doing the chem test this weekend.

Just got it back today after having the clutch repaired one of the double springs in the clutch plate had come adrift and was thrashing about inside. What else can go wrong? I have to sort out this cooling issue though.

That looks a bit scary all in bits so hats off you know what you're doing and saving labour rates Thumbs Up


I'm happy with doing basic things like oil changes on my series.

Number 4 was the cylinder with an odd combustion pattern, if any water was entering the bores, I’m 99% this was the one?
The bore looks good, as does the top face of the block,
Obviously it’s only a visual check though.



I can only hope now, that what I’ve done will be enough to cure the problem? Rolling Eyes

Your right, h/g failure is almost un heard of on the TDCI,
My local Indy has only ever done one.

I’ve never had any issues on the Transits I repair either.

I did my TD5 Disco just before I sold it, which was typical! the plastic dowels had broke causing the head to move,
Same as what happend with the K series engine in the Freelander's

Both victims of Another wonderful LR cost cutting exercise! Rolling Eyes

You can hear them now.....

Hats off to you Ian, that is some real in depth precision engineering work there involved.

Just a suggestion and you may do so anyway, but when you do fit everything and fire it up perhaps you could try some Millers diesel additive too? That should help clean things through especially the carbon deposits over time.
I run it all the time and it's pretty good.

It's been known before for some of the sprockets to have a tooth worn or even missing too.
But most instances are pretty rare.

Steve,

Believe it or not I do use it, but looking at the injector tips, and piston crowns,
I don’t think I will bother anymore!

I even gave it a double dose the night before, as I was doing a nice long run.

The internals are no cleaner than any plant equipment I’ve stripped that just runs on red diesel every day.

I’ve seen a few bad chains and sprockets, I did a 2.2 Transit a few weeks ago,
Only done 116,0000 miles Shocked
