Weight of a Series 2a Hard Top upper tailgate/cat flap

The locking mechanism of the upper tailgate or cat flap of my 1962 Series 2a Hard Top is broken so I'm investigating supporting it with telescopic gas struts.

What I don't know is how much the cat flap/upper tailgate weighs.
I've looked all over the 'net and the scant information I've read suggests around 62 lbs or 30 kilos.

Is this correct?

If anybody knows I'd be very grateful for the information.

I used one for a while with no stays and it was not that heavy to hold above my head. It would be nearer 15kg than 30kg. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

No way is it as heavy as 62lbs!

When I converted my S1 catflap to gas struts all I did was measure the force needed to hold it open with one of those cheapo luggage scales that are widely available and use that as the basis, unfortunately I can't remember what the result was. That is a more useful measurement than the overall weight anyway since the struts only support a proportion of the weight (the hinges support the rest).

If you are really concerned I do have a S2 catflap stashed away which I could weigh.

I'm going to assume 15 kilos and add 10% for "belt and braces",

When I did my S1 flap, I used the kind of strut that allows you to bleed off some of the gas to depressurise the strut. When I initially fitted them the flap would open with such vigour that I was concerned that if SWMBO (who is fairly slight) opened it she'd be flung over the garden wall! By bleeding some gas out of the struts it was possible to set them to the perfect lift.

A firm called SGS was recommended to me and I have given them all the information I can including photographs.

Your recommendation of Struts direct is much appreciated.
