Hello all,
I hope you can help. (I have fixed older, more simple cars before, but I'm no expert. The Defender Puma is the most complex thing I've owned, so please excuse any vague descriptions or lack of knowledge). I was driving my wife to the airport last night and suddenly the car lost a lot of power. It would go about 80kmh (50mph) max, but any kind of slight incline meant I had to change down gears. 6th gear was useless. It feels like the turbo isn't working. I could drop my wife at the airport and drive home slowly and the car would happily climb the steep slope up to my house in low range (which it normally needs). I've read a bunch of topics here about turbos failing, actuator problems, whistling noises etc. I haven't noticed a whistling noise. When the car is on idle, what I think is the actuator arm is moving slightly, so I think it's working. Unfortunately I am now on my own here (Chile), so i don't have someone to push the throttle while I look inside. But.. maybe I should have mentioned this first.... I have noticed a split in a hose on the opposite side of the engine to the turbo, going from the manifold, forward towards the radiator. Obviously I need to replace this, but could this be the loss of power problem and what is the hose called please? Thank you for your help. Is it safe to tape it up and use the car while I wait for delivery of a replacement? Just down to the shops and back, no large journeys. I have had the same problem in the past.
Loss of power was due to a split hose. I guess that self amalgamating tape reinforced with cable ties would make a "bush repair".

yes certainly, i would tape it up with self amalgamating, gaffa or insulation tape (in that order of preference) a piece of sturdy rubber (old hose?) cable tied or jubilee clipped on top of that otherwise pressure will just blow it off. Cheers

Its a common problem and in general start with a whith a whistle in the area of the turbo when accelerating. Yep without doubt that's your problem.
Another option is a bit of old bicycle tyre over the hole with several cable ties (zip ties) or wire around it. If you get a puncture repair kit with some vulcanising solution in it you might even be able to glue the tyre to it for a better seal as well as the cable ties. |
