windscreen Repair
Hi all, newbie here!

Out of pure interest, has anybody ever fixed their own chips in windscreens? I do not have any at the moment but was just about to put an order into MachineMart for some tools and saw https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/051715198/ which is cheaper than a single trip to auto glass. I never seen this before and looks like a handy thing to have on the shelf to save trying to find a time to get a chip fixed at auto glass! But if it’s pants I will not bother!

I've not used the product myself. It may be good enough to stop a chip becoming an annoying crack but how will the repair look when the MOT comes around? Defender 90XS SW

Just learn how to fit the screens yourself as they are pretty cheap to buy then your not paying auto glass prices. Ray

As above.
My insurance has given free repairs for as long as I can remember, check first to avoid paying for something that you are probably already covered for. Also, repairs are usually carried out at your choice of location so no need for a visit to your local branch. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

It’s worth checking with insurer, some count “free” windscreen repairs as a claim come renewal time. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I have used an identical looking kit on a small 1.5mm chip in the windscreen. Got mine off Ebay.
If its the same one it uses sunlight to cure the resin. Took about an hour to do from start to finish.
Worked well, and almost invisible when finished. Lasted for two years before I replaced the vehicle.
Even the professional repairers do not guarantee an invisible fix, and like you i couldn't be bothered waiting about for the repairer.

Maybe have a chat with Rejel too - they do some good stuff for Land Rover (like Dinitrol and windscreen stuff):

How hard is it to fit a screen for a matter of interest? I've just checked out the screen costs, and they look around £90 unheated which seems pretty reasonable, plus £15 for a new seal, which beats the excess cost which my insurance provider offers.

I've got the screen and frame off the vehicle at the moment, but I am not sure if this would make it easier or harder to fit a screen? 2005 Td5 90 XS

I had a new screen fitted recently, my frame and screen was off the car and the fitter said he prefers them on the car although he fitted the new screen and seal easily enough. I would buy a genuine screen seal rather than an after market one.

I am sure there's videos on youtube showing how to do it. I would certainly be prepared to give it a go! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Just to throw a spanner into the works, I have in the past fitted genuine and aftermarket windscreen seals and both have split at the corners after about three years, so I can not justify the exorbitant price of genuine.
Although to be fair I think no matter what seal you use it all depends where the vehicle is parked most of the time, in the full sun the seal is going to perish faster than if the vehicle is parked in the shade. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I had a local vehicle glass place replace mine recently. They asked me to provide the seal and specifically requested an aftermarket one because they've fitted all sorts in the past and "they're all the same". If I'd returned it for leakage in the near term they'd have to refit it FOC so I was happy to pocket the saving.

I had a new windscreen fitted by National Windscreens on my insurance a few weeks ago. I asked about me supplying OEM seal. The guy at NW was from my regiment and told me not to bother - they buy theirs from the same maker who supplies LR. They also said if you go to the nearest LR dealer and ask them to fit a new windscreen they will charge you just under £600 - and sub it out to NW (their people do the windscreens for the dealer). If you went to NW direct you'd pay about a third of the price fitted. 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent
