Are they fake roll hoops? I thought they bolted to the top of the B post and to a bracket fitted to the front of the A post. Should be quite strong in a roll over, a lot stronger than the windscreen frame. They just have the appearance of being bolted to flimsy bits.
I think under the front wing there is a large steel bracket that attaches to the front of the A post/bulkhead, which in turn is attached to the chassis out rigger. I should imagine the B post top has a bracket bolted to the top of it, which as you guessed has the roof spreader plate as part of it. |

Yes the wing plates are captive. The rubber gaskets are expensive so if you can save them do!

That's good - thanks. I tried to get to the back of the wing mounting points earlier and failed! Does anyone know about the roof mounting points? |

If they're not it only takes about 10 min to drop the centre section of the head lining and slide it backwards. |

Superb info - thankyou. But sadly it reveals that all the (inaccessible) M10 nuts are nyloc. And not captive So getting this down to the local stove enamelers is going to require a lot more disassembly than I'd envisaged... |

I'm pretty sure if you pop the wheel arch spats off the front you'll be able to reach up and undo the nuts.
As I said headlining is easy. Just get new plastic fixings for the spats and headlining, it's not worth trying to reuse old ones. |

Defender black hoops are captive at the front wings, I took one off last week to get it shot blasted for a customer. The front headliner needs removed, pulled back or dropped onto the head rests. The “cant” rails above the doors come off the main hoop with a bolt too. Can take pictures tomorrow if you want, but it’s fairly simple.
