Martin - I'm happy to edit any of my posts that contain language you deem to fall below the standards of site etiquette.

I'd be really unhappy if the core issue of the discussion was taken offline. I think it's one of the many purposes & benefits of sites like yours that issues such as these can be aired publically and shared amongst genuine owners.

Just my 2 cents.

I think that you are both right. It’s legal and at the same time it’s illegal.

Up to recently the MOT inspector followed the letter. Thus standing straight behind the vehicle. Ergo no obstruction.

But more and more they and the police (from personal experience Laughing ) follow the spirit. So not standing straight behind the vehicle but at an angle. Thus view is obstructed.

I have seen the solution but can’t find the photo. It was just a single step below the plate and a shorter ladder above the plate a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Thanx for the photo but nope this isn’t the one. I’ve been looking on the internet myself to find it.

Most of those split ladders have an awkward (my very personal opinion Laughing ) look to them. But i’ll Keep looking and will post the photo when I find it. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

So, given this new found fervour amongst MOT inspectors across the country, is something like the Frontrunner offering the only acceptable approach? The top half of that is ok, apart from the need to drill holes, but the bottom step is a bit rubbish. Perhaps somebody will come up with a folding version based on the top part of the FR design Rolling Eyes

Having got a camera speeding ticket with a older parallel type brownchurch ladder would suggest to me that an mot fail for the ladder supposedly obscuring the number plate has been incorrectly issued.

I cannot conceive of any interpretation of the law or MOT manual which would make that ladder acceptable. Frankly it baffles me that anyone would think that it is legal!
