Hi,

What do you think will happen if 3.2 liters are filled into the Puma 2.2 MT82 Gearbox? Is it 100% required to drain it and re-fill with 2.2 liters?

I can drain the whole amount and put back 2.2 liters
It seems that many Defenders are filled with 3 liters in the factory and there are no problems or at least I could not fined any complains repleted to more oil in gearbox.

Mine definitely had 2.2 litres from the factory when new. Drain and refill with correct amount
its only a 5 minute job really.

I drained my gearbox and measured the quantity which was circa 2 litres (see photograph). I then refilled it with 2.2 litres. See photo below of drained oil - crude measure, but reasonable indicator of quantity in box.

You were right. It is 5 min job. I drained 3.2 L and filled back 2.2.

Hi everybody!!

Recently I opend the fill plug in my puma’s mt82 gearbox and noticed that gearbox oil was slowly escaping from the filler hole. This should not happen because this box is not filled “until full”. My defender was at one of the leading Swiss specialists for defenders (not an official LR dealer) for servicing last summer, including changes of all oils. So it seems the specialist hast overfilled the mt82.

I drained ca. 3.2 liters from the mt82 and refilled a tad over 2.2 liters!

A test drive immediately after the drain/refill showed good shifting. Maybe very slightly better than before with the overfilled box, but not an entirely new shifting feel. Lets see whether a more clear distinction shows on a long trip. Stil disappointed that the specialist overfilled... My mt82 generally suffers from clunky gear changes 1-2 and 2-3: today however shifting nicely before and - maybe somewhat better - after the refill with correct amount of oil.

Ravenol ???
I am having difficulty finding compatible fluids that are listed here and other UK sites, in the USA. I am getting my 2.4 ready and need to track these down. I noticed that I can get Ravenol brand motor oil and gearbox oil on Amazon here and they seem to meet the specification call outs I have found. I have not noticed you guys mentioning this brand so I figured let me check and see if there is any feedback. Thanks

The pump is very effective and I found it very quick to deliver a litre of oil at a time. I just made up a curved brass tube and an extended flexible tube that would make it easier to hook into the gearbox fill port. Highly recommended. The pump can be purchased from eBay for less than a tenner. Brass tube from a hardware store and a bit of flexible PVC tubing to extend the reach.

Are the Axle and transfer box oils the sames oils, if the Oil is a GL5 standard?

Conclusion found
So from my research here and looking at all the videos online I have come to the conclusion that diffs, transfer and gearbox oils are all the same. Looking at the handbook also, it is possible to use 1 oil for all 3 and be within the recommended guidelines.

I was planning to use Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90. Which is a GL4 coded Oil. But instead went for the Motul Gear 300 which is a GL4/GL5. GL5 being (from what I have seen from all the research done-but i am no expert Whistle ) is a harder wearing grade.

So, Motul Gear 300 in Gearbox, Transfer box and both Axles it is. Bit more expensive but why eff about.

Hope this helps other and saves them the many house I spent trying to research the best options.

Have not bought the oil yet so if i'm wrong please shout. Thumbs Up

Hi All!

My Defender got dunked / drowned and the mechanics drained the transmission just to be sure there is no water contamination and since the "official" gear oil for the transmission is very difficult to come by, they used ATF for the meantime.

Now that I need to change out the master cylinder, secondary, new pipework (upgraded system), clutch disc, pressure plate, (still flood related) I was thinking of changing out the ATF to proper gear oil, this being the case, should I just put in the standard 2.2 liters or should I go with the dry fill of 2.4 liters? Buying 3L of Motul Gear 300 from Opie Oils for this job.

Also, now that I'm changing out most of the clutch hydraulic system, how much DOT 4 do I need?
