Yes,if it’s a 1955 it will be an 86”
It would be a good idea to join the club, then you will get the club magazine, Which will be useful to you. How much work does it need? Before you jump in and pull it apart, workout what you need? Chassis ok? Bulkhead ok? Engine etc etc...... They are serious money to put right again, Do some home work first, and make sure it’s actualy a viable project! I’m not trying to put you off, but people don’t realise how much they cost to put right. I’ve seen a lot of people pull them from hedgerows thinking it will be a straight forward project, Only to give up in the first few weeks. Anymore info on it? Condition, etc, would be good see some pictures. If you want to save yourself a lot of hassle and fancy one already done, I’m selling mine this year! Sadly, it just doesn’t get the use!
As much as I love it, my passion is in 80” Land Rovers and the two I have is more than enough, I’ve done less than 50 Miles in it this year, It just sits, which I don’t think does them any good. The money from it, will pay for a new barn/workshop, and other new projects..... I hope to get it into auction around spring time. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Thanks Ian, for the tips and the offer, it’s a lovely beast but I’m afraid I don’t have that sort of money!
The back story is that this is my uncle’s vehicle and it was the first car I ever drove, a few years later it became the first my sister drove too. His daughter doesn’t have any interest in it and we do so the plan is to give it to us to keep in the family. My understanding is that it has been standing a long while and will need a full strip and rebuild, the bodywork is ok, there are two engines, I think one is the original and there’s another which is age appropriate or something. Even if the chassis is sound (which is highly unlikely after 60 years) I plan on having it stripped, galvanised and powder coated so it should last a good long while after that. Currrently it’s up near my father’s place in Shropshire while I’m Hampshire based. The imagined plan is that my sister and I convene for a weekend a month and take bits away to work on at our respective homes in the evenings. I don’t know how naïve I’m being with that, on a scale of Easy to Totally Unrealistic I suspect I’m probably half way up However, I’m hoping that approach will enable me to spread the cost, the rough estimate I’ve had is near £15k, but that included labour so I’m hoping to halve that at least by doing as much ourselves as possible. I’m planning on seeing it properly next Saturday so hopefully fuller information and some pictures then. JOW, thanks for the reminder - I read something similar too and I’m on to those issues, will see my uncle in early Feb to sort out all the paperwork. |

Good luck with your project. I have rebuilt several Series 1's over the years, 80's and 86's in different variants. They are great fun and make a good project. Definitely join the Series One Club and buy a parts and workshop manual as they are invaluable especially if you have not embarked on a rebuild before. As Ian has said they can cost serious money to restore back to original specification. You need to decide what you want from the vehicle; show pony or something that you can use, also how original you want it to be as that will dictate how much it will cost.

Yeah - this is a big issue which I need to discuss with my uncle and sister. My personal preference is to have a running vehicle which looks authentic, but it will be a living machine which I hope to pass on to my children. I'm hoping to chart a middle way, so I will not be upset if it has more modern underpinnings. Safety is paramount, I won't be putting inertia reel seatbelts on forward facing fold up seats in the back, but I would like the brakes to be more substantial than cocoa-tin lids. I doubt I will be leaving worn bodywork where it's back to bare metal, but I won't be painting it lime green and putting a V8 in either. It's not my plan to have a bearded stereotype (sorry if you are) tell me that some part is wrong and start getting all bothered about sequential serial numbered parts etc. |
