Thanks to all for their support - there are some kind words, and at least one very kind offer on here all helping me make my decision. In the meantime here are a couple of photos.

Thanks!
What those photos don’t show is that the top of the bulkhead is air, I’m pretty sure the windscreen is only still upright because of the hard top and the hinges! Tips on supplier for a new one would be appreciated, I’m told to expect a £2k bill (and presumably another £400 on top for the VAT man’s tireless efforts). |

You could either spend around 2k on a new bulkhead,
Or fix it? Top rails are fairly straight forward to replace, as are the footwells, Dale Radford up in the Scottish Highlands will sell you the parts, When I did mine (top rail, both footwells) it came in around £300 for the parts, As your aware, it’s a major part of the vehicle, so it’s worth getting it right from the start. There is a chap a few miles from me making bulkheads, (Marshall’s) and they are simply stunning! Either one of his or one of Dale Radfords would be the way to go, Depends on your budget? https://www.seriesbulkheads.com/ http://www.radfordbulkheads.lrsoc.com/ 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. Forgot to say,
I’ve got some photos of when I did my 86”on my iPad, I will post some later of how repairable an old bulkhead is, if you have the time! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

I think Dale mentioned recently that he has a long waiting list for bulkheads, repair parts shouldn't be a problem though. I have seen photos of the bulkheads which Ian mentions (Marshalls) and they do look superb. A chap called Jean Dexter (Belgium?) was also producing them and again they are great quality from what I have seen.

I bought a Dexter bulkhead through Tom Pickford last year £1600 all in.
Very well made and Tom has them E coated. |

Going from memory (I no longer have an 86") the Marshalls bulkhead looks nice but is not rivet-counter accurate.
(Do you have a pic from the engine side of the bulkhead for your 86" Ian? I thought there were two welded-on triangular plates where the inner top edge of the footwells meet the main bulkhead, rather than one, but as said I'm going from memory!) Have Radfords' bulkheads become more accurate in recent years, as you used to be able to spot them a mile off. You should have great difficulty in faulting a Jean Dexters bulkhead though. Some of the most fastidious restorers use his bulkheads. Exchange rates and importing, may make them expensive though. Any of the three mentioned will do a good job, and next time you are at a gathering of SI's, you can while away a few idle moments seeing if you can spot the differences between the re-manufactured bulkheads and originals. But keep your thoughts to yourself though - as no-one likes a rivet-counter! |

I do, but not on my phone, but your right about the plates.
I know Dexter’s take some beating, but like you say, the price may put people off? I couldn’t tell you what they total now? Not sure about Dales either, it’s been a while since I’ve seen one of his? I have visited Ev Marshall at his workshop, he’s a really nice guy, His bulkheads are stunning, he is very passionate about what he does, and it reflects in his work. If I needed another, I would happily have one of his, They are sensibly priced too. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Here we go hopefully in not too much of a rivet counter mode Ian's bulkhead looks great and well restored. I'm thinking its an 88in having the hole in the floor for the foot operated dip switch, so if it is indeed and 88in bulkhead the small triangular plates welded on to the top corners of the foot well were replaced by pressed curved and spot welded strengtheners.
I'll get my coat |
