Had a few cold mornings recently and noticed the DC is struggling to fire up a little more than normal. When she does, big burst of smelly, blue smoke, a rough idle for a couple of heartbeats, then settles. Smoke turns white for a while and when the engine is at optimum temp, clear.
Looked on-line and there's talk of leaking turbo seeals, dirty fuel filter, too much oil in sump, worn piston seals etc etc etc. For those who wish to analyse on my behalf, please note the following: 1. Only happens when cold 2. I have a MAF Sensor/or airbreach in turbo pipes warning which has yet to be addressed 3. No loss of power as far as I can tell 4. I did a full oil + filter change but ran out of time to do fuel filter which is planned for this weekend. If the 'Pow' is not too deep and tempting!! Any thoughts welcome [/list] Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

mine used to do exactly that, but since I've changed the VCV and had it re-learnt, it hasn't done it once so I am confident that was the culprit. My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

Thank you all. Will look in to it. Out of interest, does the puff of smoke relate to the VCV as well, or is that another issue, and the VCV relates purely to the difficult, cold-start? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Gents,
I had similar only after a long non running period or overnight. The first start seems to be difficult with some smoke others after that when engine was warm or the only left off for a short period ok. We changed the VCV which did not make much of a difference but it turned out to be an injector which was not fully closing, it would leak fuel into the cylinder and cause the smoke. Once this was changed (and earth straps cleaned up) it starts on the button with no smoke Dave |

Thanks Noisey Dave. Interestingly last night I was under the bonnet filling up on washer fluid and so took a peak having read your post and the second injector along (from the front) is dirty and oily whilst the others all clean. Would this be a clue? Monsieur Le Grenadier

That would only indicate an injector seal is leaking. Nothing to do with white smoke.

Hi Grenadier... Our Bowler 110 does exactly the same thing if left for a few weeks without being used.. Under normal running it's perfect.
Some things I've noticed which may or may not be important are... That when it does 'puff' on start up, The battery is usually slow to crank and occasionally you get a chirp from the alarm (especially if it's freezing and hasn't been run for quite a few weeks) I've put this 'puff' and lumpy running down to low initial battery power, Which makes sense if you think about the pulse for the injector coils.. I.E low battery volts would mean a slower to close injector... Also, things like air temps and such like may be off by some margin... This problem doesn't occur (for me anyway) if you then run the truck the next day or within the same week... During summer when it's being used nearly daily, It doesn't occur at all... I've got one of Pete's ID tools, So next time I may monitor what's going on and make some notes.. Regards Tim It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse... 2013 Bowler 110 (Sold) 2016 Bowler 90 Rally Spec (Sold) |

Thanks Tim and Lightening. Interestingly it started perfectly throughout last winter when we had a month with overnight temps averaging -10c+. This year, it gets the big puff, is slow to fire up, rattles a Little first then settles. Also the exhaust emissions smell a little strong. All coincided when the MAF sensor warning came on. As mentioned, I did a full oil/filter change in anticipation the blue puff to begin with was that, but no change. I did also read that if you have slightly over filled it, excess oil in the sump can create a difficult tick-over and puff on fire up. Anyone know?
As mentioned, once driving and warm, power seems the same, nice idle, clear emissions (although still a bit smelly) and to all intents and purposes normal. As it will be all day. Leave overnight and the cycle starts again. One day I hope to find a fault on my Def (no point in assuming there’ll be a day I’ll never find one ) which has only one possible remedy rather than seven.
