Intermittent Front Wiper- variable delay

Here's an easy one for you, relatively cheap and one you'll use almost every day (especially in Scotland

)

Replace the standard wiper relay with a VW Relay 99.

The default interval is, say 10 seconds. to get a different length of time, you put the switch to intermittent then back to the 'off position before the wipers return to park position. You then put the switch to intermittent after the appropriate interval. IE "On,off...15 seconds...on" gives you a 15 sec interval or "on,off..4 secs..on" gives 4 second interval.

It also governs how many wipes of the front windscreen you get when you use the washer jets, 1 wipe for a small squirt, more for a longer press of the washer switch.

Fitting is really easy. On a Td5 or Tdi, remove the instrument cluster (4 screws) and remove the LR (lucas) relay. I ascertained which relay it was by activating the intermittent wipers and listening/feeling the relay 'click', once removed simply plug in the VW '99' relay, and obviously check the wipers still work on intermittent before you put it back together.

For the TDCi, open the fuse box under the steering wheel, either a screwdriver or a thin coin does the trick. On a 110 XS USW the pinky/red lucas relay was in the top middle position:

Thanks for the clear explanation, can i ask some questions??

Where did you get the relay?

How much was the relay?

When in the intermittent mode is the wiper stalk in the "off" position or the "intermittent" position?

How do you turn the wipers off when no longer required?

Sorry for all the questions, but have read about this before, and am thinking about having a go, but one of the problems i have is that my knee is in the way of my intermittent setting, So I turn it off every time I take my foot off the acc and on to the brakes.

P.s. This is not because I am a freak, it is due to the fact that being a tradesman I have trousers with large padded knees

Andy,

the relay is available second-hand on ebay for few quids (i paid mine 7.5 GBP +P&P)

to work, the wiper stalk has to be in the intermittent position otherwise the current is cut and noting works

To stop the intermittent wiping, just put on off position.

Works on the Puma too (see Dgardel's thread). Just the relay is in a different location (relay box under the steering wheel)

I found mine on eBay too, just under £10 inc postage, pretty cheap as they seem to go for up to £20 (I used www.gixen.com to snipe for me

)

Yes, to clarify the wiper only works in the intermittent position (as standard), the only difference is you put switch to 'off/park' position while the wiper is moving then back to intermittent to set the delay/interval you want.

Fitted one to a mate's TDCi 90 after a 4x4 response meeting on Wednesday, it's so much easier on the TDCi as you don't need to take the instruments off.

Another member on here bought one of the relays from me for his TDCi 110, don't know if he's fitted it yet though. The advantages of buying a job lot of relays become clear, you can spread the word about how easy it is and how useful it is. Mark S

Just had a second hand relay delivered off e/bay cost £9.50 + postage fitted it to my 2011 XS in about 20seconds flat works perfectly, will now get a new one to fit, great mod well worth the money DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
