Refurbishing Roof Rack
I have a well used and weathered Hannibal rack that is looking past it’s best. I want to refurb it and have been considering going down the anodising route. I guess that could be expensive but my first problem is so far I’ve been unable to find somewhere that can handle an item this size. The top plate is 1700x1400mm.

Has anyone else here had a roof rack anodised or can recommend a firm able to take on this type of work?

Have a few words with the guys at Specialised Coatings in Halifax.

1.7 x1.4 m is not too large for them.

Not sure if they do anodising but worth a phone call and they are relatively local to you.

They do a lot of work for North Sea oil rigs, mobile cranes and roll cages.

Brendan, thank you for the pointer. Nothing obvious on their website relating to anodising but as you suggest, worth an enquiry on Monday Thumbs Up

If you can speak to Paul there, (owner/director) if he can not help/advise you I will be surprised.

Paul used to own/race Defenders so has knowledge/experience about Defenders.

I know they treat roll cages for a respected roll cage manufacturer.

Why anodise rather then powder coat rack?

Brendan, Powdercoat is another option I’ve been considering and tbh I’m still on the fence. My interest in the anodising comes from a suggestion that it will be more durable and scratch/chip resistant than a powdercoat finish? Not sure just how true this theory is though? I’m wanting to go from the natural aluminium colour to black and don’t want the rack to start to look tatty as soon as I start using it.

I have no personal experience of getting items anodised so no recommendations or comments about that process.

Powder coating, we do have some items powder coated for us.

The difficulty with a process such as powder coating is the pretreatment and temperature control.

Now most coating processes do not like thin sharp edges as the coat gets 'thin' on the very edge. Coatings prefer large rounded edges.

Good powder coaters bead blast, undercoat and then top coat. Apparently the time between bead blasting and coating is important as the metal can oxidise which apparently affects the adhesion of the powder. Get the heat treatment wrong then the adhesion of the coating to the metal substrate is compromised

Like most things some firms are cheaper and skim on the preparation processes.

I have seen the Specialised Coatings ovens etc. They have some items in from us this week. There are some local firms who we will not use.

HTH

I am no expert on coating, it is what I have picked up talking to coaters and our suppliers

That helps very much Brendan, thank you for taking the time and trouble to share your experiences/knowledge.

If I decide to go down the powder coating route, I’ll happily follow up your recommendation.

Thank you again,

Peter

I'd be interested to hear how you get on. I've just got an 8yo Hannibal which is in OK condition but some corrosion and paint flake. I was considering re-powder coating but was concerned about both stripping and powder coating in the fixing channel. The fixing bolts are a pretty tight fit and if I was concerned if it didn't go right you'd be stuck. James

Hi James, I’ll update this thread once I’ve made some progress. Fortunately I don’t have the same problem since my Hannibal is an earlier version without the fixing channels. However, if you go ahead and then discover there’s insufficient channel clearance for your fasteners (8mm?) could you not lightly file a couple of opposite flats on the bolt heads?
