Loose metal noise/rattle when the going gets tough
I went out on a rather tough 4x4 trail the weekend and heard that each time the drive-train is under stress (like going up a steep hill in a gear that ends up not being strong enough in the end) - that there is a metal clutter/ noise coming from the undercarriage. Is it the prop shafts vibrating? Is it normal? Rolling Eyes

Yeah - yeah - I should have it in the right gear but not always easy if you're hanging on the edge of a cliff....

All i can tell you is you almost described the noise and conditions i got tha gave me a new clutch (no 2) i think i had 3 in total.

But it all depends on the noise. Mike

I had this same noise, LR thougt it was the clutch... Turned out to be a heat - shield underneath giving this noise.
I just needed to push it into place again and noise gone... Smile

+1 tighten my bolts up again today after. Was about 2 months since I last tightened them and they were nearly falling out. Although I did a straight 14hrs from Alps to home at 70 on the autoroute. Just the right frequency to rattle them loose.

Could just possibly be the rear brake rattle feature. easy to test, lightly apply the brake with left foot and see if the noise stops.

More likely to be the clutch I think.

No definitely not traction control. Sounds more like thin metal plates rattling against eachother. I'll go check the heat shield (just not sure why it only rattles when the vehicle is running out of oomph on steep inclines?)

Anyway - any excuse to spend some time under the landy......

Sounds like could be the brake pads against the calipers.... see the link to this thread specifically about that very common problem

Had exactly the same symptom on mine and it was the transfer case touching a steel protection plate that I have fitted as extra. The protection plate was bent a bit in the middle between the chassis beams after some playing on deep snow and rocks.

What about that ?

Could also be a failed transfer case mount.

I asked a similar question about a year ago.
When towing the caravan and pulling away in an inappropriately high gear from low speed (say third instead of second) I can hear a clanky rattle that lasts for about a second or two. It too sounds like its coming from the front prop or diff and disappears as speed increases. I was advised that its perfectly normal under load. I haven't towed since last August and my drivetrain is totally clonk free so hopefully its nothing to worry about Thumbs Up
