2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Stornoway Grey

Mud flap mounting

Over the past few days I noticed a clunking/banging sound which seemed to be coming from the rear of my 110. I thought it was something inside the 110, but I looked hard and discovered the source... It seems that my right-rear mud flap has decided to detach itself. It cracked where the flap attaches to the rear quarter panel.

I don't know how it happened... It wasn't like this last week when I washed it, and I've only driven on motorways ever since. Bizarre.

I've got to bring it in to the dealer for about 7 or 8 other minor issues to be sorted under warranty - is it worth speaking to them about this?

i know it doesn't help now, but when i fitted some checker plate there, i noticed that the panel lip was a tad thin...

i found that the newly fitted plate and a larger washer top & bottom, seemed to 'beef up' that bracket attachment.

food for thought, if your in for repair.

I was only asking yesterday whether Entreq had finalised their modification of the mudflap hanger as they too have noted that the rear quarter panel is a poor choice when it comes to hanging a mudflap and can result in unnecessary damage to the panel if you are unlucky enough! Entreq website says that the mod should have been available August 2010!?

Interesting.. I was planning on putting some chequer plate there anyway.

I had the same failure in both mudflaps. Finally I decide to reinfoirce the panel with a L shape aluminium strip riveted to the panel.

I too have had exactly the same problem on the RHS. Never had it on any of my previous 110's!

Like Eduardo, I have reinforced the area with stips of alluminium top and bottom of the origional lip.

This should be covered under warranty. Mine came off altogether - and I've also done a lot of motorway miles. In my opinion the stiffness of the mudflap is causing too much stress to the mounting on the body panel. The thin aluminium just cannot take it.

As it happens mine is going into the dealer tomorrow specifically to have this repaired - they are taking it to a bodyshop. My own temporary repair has worked well but I wanted an "approved" repair. Hope I don't regret it.

what about a stainless steel reinforcement bracket for those, who do not like chequer plates ? Such a bracket could be made to low costs and would be very effective......

I have had similar problems to those posted in this thread. My local dealer added a strip of metal to strengthen the mounting to the lower wing as warranty repair. I like the neat solution posted by Red Desert.

Olaf, have you this option for sale on your website yet? How are you getting on with the stainless rear replacement mud flap brackets?

Brian......I just have finished the drawings for the rear Def 90 Mudflaps. I will finish the drawings for the rear 110 at the end of this week.

the rear ones will be a combination of stainless bracket and reinforcement......just give me some time to work a few details out
