I'm no expert but my opinion would be that I'm sure the mileage was reflected in the price you paid for it so just keep it well maintained and if anything breaks it can be relatively easily replaced.

I always like to consider it as percentage factor to make me feel better doing a journey in a high mileage car.
Say you are doing a 600mile trip. A high miler will hardly notice the difference in miles while the low miler it will see a significant % increase. Which would you trust more? Obviously it helps to know the high mileage car’s history and have the comfort factor that it is well maintained. |

Most older landrovers are like Triggers brush, Most parts can be replaced cheaply. Keep it serviced it should be fine

I had similar concerns when I bought my 300tdi csw, however having used it a main vechicle over the past 6months or so I've had no major issues. The advice I was given was as long as the chassis and bulkhead were solid, and dont be too concerned about wear and tear on mechanical parts as these can easily be replaced. Admittedly I did a bit of work on it when I first had it but that was more on the chassis/body areas.

As others have said, enjoy it! If you service it regularly and keep it well maintained, high milage is no problem. My 300 Tdi from 1996 has 388 k km on the clock, it is my daily driver (and only car), and I trust it to start a 2000 km trip any moment.

Echo all of the above. Mine had 226k miles on it and the engine ran fine.
With that kind of mileage, there will be wear and tear on friction areas - bearings, oil pump, thrust washers, cam lobes and followers, crank journals, piston rings and bores. Also seals will start to perish. The 300tdi is a tough old engine and will run happily even with major wear. Just keep it well serviced and I would advise changing the timing belt, water pump and checking oil and combustion pressure to give you an idea whats going on. Also check the turbo for play and excess oil and pop the intercooler and inlet manifold off to check them through and give them a good clean. If there is excess oil in these then you may have a turbo issue which is common at higher mileages and easily fixed. Undoubtedly the previous owner had work done so its worth speaking with them to find out what has been repaired/replaced to give you some idea of what still needs looking after. Its a simple engine to maintain and fix so get out and enjoy it! |

I know its slightly different but we have a fleet of over 200 mostly Cummins and Mercedes engines (slightly larger ones than ours) but we change them at about 450k miles, many of them exhibit no major wear when removed for overhaul, the duty cycle is a lot different however to the average car. Thanks all for the advice! I'll be sure to enjoy every trip and maintain it properly. It's nice getting to talk to people here who love their Land Rovers as much as me (or even more!

that looks smart, i think there were some timing belt mods in that era, suspect its been done but may be worth checking DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

As others have said about maintenance regularly serviced will be a good thing, i service mine every 6000 miles and im on 317k now  enjoy your time with your landy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Congratulations on your taste. As others have mentioned, if they are looked after Defenders can do stellar mileages. I had a 300 110 from new and put 322,000 miles on it in 12 years. The only thing I did was to shorten the service intervals to 5000 miles once it got past 100,000 miles. Just to keep the numbers simple.
A friend has a truck that is approaching 700,000 miles, it started life as a V8 was converted to a BMW straight six and currently runs a Brazilian 2.8 Tdi. My own v8 has done approximately 380,000 miles and is still going well, if expensively, lots of petrol and oil changes every 2,500 miles. |
