Combined key fob question
I've purchased a combined key fob off fleaBay with the intention of getting it programmed to the 10AS unit

This is similar to the key I've bought: -

Should there be a transponder chip in gap in the fob marked by the red box above as per the one shown in the red box below: -

Hope that makes sense Question

Any advice on this issue welcome Thumbs Up

Cheers

After further research (i.e. looking inside my existing plip), it seems that you don't need a transponder chip.

However it looks like the blank blades for the all in one fobs are the mirror image to the Defender key: -

As such it's no use! Embarassed

Further thinking and cunning plan required...

Get your original key copied to a new blank then set about it with a grinder and fashion it into the same shape as the supplied one and then fit that in the fob Thumbs Up

Think I may have found a solution: -

Buy one of these transponder non central locking type key blanks off eBay for £4ish: -

Pull the blade out of it and note it's similar to the one that came out of the Freelander/Disco 2 combined key/fob: -

just need to drive out the pin and transplant the plastic cover and pin over to the Defender blade.

May need to fettle it a bit but should be ok. Will do a full write up once I've got it cranking the engine.

could you not just buy and blank and ask the local key cutter to grind and drill a hole for you?

Following on from your response to my post (thanks!)

I have been using a "transponder non central locking type key blank off eBay" that I had cut for months.
I've ordered a combined key/fob so once that arrives I will have the basic key and blade elements sorted.

Have you had any joy programming the electrics/button/transponder to operate?

Bit late on this so sorry for resurrecting an old thread.

Recently purchased a Gap IID BT diagnostic tool which is able to reprogram keys.

Tried to pair the Valeo combined key with the Defender but no joy.

Tried a standard Lucas 17TN fob I bought off eBay for £5 and that paired no problem.

I'm still researching and if I find anything, will report back.

Why not just get the key and programmer from here. I’ve seen a few good reports of the company but never used them myself.

Hi Ray,

Did consider that initially but I'd read that the Valeo Freelander 1/Disco 2 combined key was essentially the same thing as the Lucas TN17 fob.

I wanted to see if it could be done as then it would be a good money saving solution that folks on here could take advantage of Thumbs Up

It seems that the Valeo fob operates differently to the Lucas one though Big Cry

The Gap IID tool was bought for other reasons, the ability to program keys was a bonus so I took advantage of it to try and program the Valeo combined key. When that didn't work, I was able to program a Lucas fob so now I have 2 (when I bought the vehicle it only had 1).

Cheers,
