My 1984 Ninety
Time to start a thread on my 1984 'Ninety' - keep having to tell myself its not a Defender!
Some of you will have seen my other thread on the life of my 16MY 110 USW which unfortunately is up for sale to free up cash for boring things.
However I've managed to keep a little bit aside for this as I wasn't prepared to be Land Rover-less!

I was on the look out for a late Series 3 or an early 90 and found this - one of the earliest 90's fresh out of a barn. Its had some historic repairs to the chassis but the body and bulkhead are straight and solid and it has the old 2.25 petrol, likely with leaded head still. Its amazingly original and untouched - supplying dealer stickers, handbook, toolkit etc and no 'mods'. It's also MOT'd till February.

Despite its totally original state, which I'm keen to preserve, I will be making a few changes to make it match my the imagery of the 1980's (Only period correct OEM period stuff!) which inspired me when I was a kid. We'll see what happens but one thing I'm sure of is it'll definitely have to be a full soft top.

So what actually needs doing then. Well for a car that is meant to be kept in the garage while it just about scraped in as it is (truck cab, having sold the pig-pen on eBay and tiny 600's!), it won't once its got the aforementioned 750's and soft top fitted. So modifying the garage has advanced up the to do list.

Next up it runs pretty rich and idles a bit slowly - never having had a petrol before all tips on fettling a Weber 32/34 DMTL carb gratefully received!
Diff lock appears to work, but I can't get the lever to move into low range so that'll need some investigation too, I may do this at the same time as repairing the rusty battery box as I'll have the seat box out for that.
Other than that, all is good so a gentle recommissioning and enjoy it!

Apart from the wheels, that is fantastic. The only thing I'd be cautious about is the condition of the bulkhead. On mine, which is only 25 years old, the bulkhead looked great until I took the dash apart, which revealed some hidden corrosion. No sign at all from the outside. Darren

Is it a 2.25 or a 2.5; I think the 2.5 has additional webbing to the block; they look very similar.
The 2.5 is also a 5 bearing crank.

I replaced an old 2.25 in my old series 2a with a "90" 2.5 but kept the original "zenith" car setup.
Cracking engine; although I did have to replace the head as I was running LPG at the time and thought the head was unleaded but it wasn't. Cheap enough at the time - even paid "Steve Parker" prices.

I think the 2.5 petrol wasn't introduced until 1985.

Later 2.25 engines also had the 5 bearing crank, from around 1980 from memory. Darren

Lovely 90... to get mine in the garage I had the up and over door replaced with a roller shutter door.. scrapes in now with about 10cms to spare Thumbs Up 1993 200Tdi Defender 90
