@ 22900013A - Hi Dan, yeah surprised we've not crossed paths already but I have seen your 110 about. Love a Keswick Utility I'm hoping to get this all running for when Caffeine and Machine reopens in July (rumour I heard) so could well meet up there!
@Slideywindows - Thanks for the advice, I suspect I'll find the cause of the slight misfire and lumpy running is debris in the system, once I've sorted the brakes I'm thinking new tank and lines and a poke around the carb @L110CDL - Thanks for the regular encouragements Clayton, glad it's of interest and yes I plan to keep the pictures coming as there's plenty of high's and low's ahead of me on this journey I reckon Instagram: L90andy My 1984 Ninety: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071.html - SOLD! So the brake job summary; one step forward several backwards! Armed with these...
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge ...I waded in full of confidence this would be a simple job, I previously posted saying I'd over extending the brake flexi causing it to split, but having got into the job I realise the flexi was fine but the small hard line around the caliper was split. Click image to enlarge I ordered a set of those to go on along with the now not strictly necessary flexi's. Fitting was relatively simple on the o/s and it all bled through with the eezi-bleed nicely. I also modified the flexi bracket on the axle with a hacksaw so that I won't have to split the pipe to remove the caliper in the future by simply cutting a slice off the top. Click image to enlarge O/S all done Click image to enlarge The n/s went smoothly too until I bled the system and found the hardline coming down from the chassis had a tiny pin hole in it So now I've got to remake the whole cross car line from the master cylinder across the bulkhead and down. Back to waiting on parts, but no rush and i'm happy knowing it'll all be safe once done. Hopefully the rear axle will go as planned! New fuel tank arrived today. Doing some research seems to say its a pig to get the old one out so I'll leave all the bolts soaking before I commence in the hope they all come apart ok. I've already ordered replacement fixings so I can get heavy handed with the old ones regardless. Also received the new front brake pipe so I'll fit this first while the tank bolts are soaking. When I bought a new pattern fuel tank, I found that the paint was flaking off. Underneath the flaking paint, there was another coat of black paint though, which looked like it had bonded well to the steel. I decided to flake off all the outer layer of paint, key the remaining first layer of paint, and re paint the tank in 2K paint. Hopefully it will give extra protection, as compared to the original fuel tank, this pattern tank is not galvanized. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Good tip Dinnu, I'll look into that.
The new replacement brake line included the correct fittings and already had flared ends, it arrived in a coil so I had to manually make all the straight sections and get the bends in the right place and hope it was long enough. Turns out it was too long and as I didn't have tools for shortening and flaring I ended up coiling the spare bit up and tying it out the way. I'll sort that properly once its mobile again. Either way it all fitted easily enough and it bled through nicely again with the eezi-bleed. Didn't get any pics of that as was dark when I'd finished! Still need to do the rear flexi but that can wait as this happened last night: Click image to enlarge I'd read horror stories about getting the tank out and having to remove the sill but in the end it dropped out fairly easily once I'd got the front bracket off. The Project Binky boys would be impressed with it being a bracket on a bracket on a bracket! Click image to enlarge I'll now clean and paint the chassis up while access is good and then fit the new tank. Then I'll follow the fuel system to the carb and make sure its clear of debris so hopefully it'll run nicer. Instagram: L90andy My 1984 Ninety: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071.html - SOLD! Ok so getting the new tank in was a bit trickier as didn't have gravity on my side, but it lost the battle and I got it in after a twenty minute fight. I reckon if someone else's car was on the tighter side of the build tolerance it wouldn't go in with the sill member on, guess I just got lucky.
Painted the final bit of chassis I couldn't get to with the old tank in place. Click image to enlarge Old vs new. Had to make sure I got the correct tank as the early ones only had one hole. Assume that's because they have an external fuel pump. Click image to enlarge All done and looking clean with new seals and fixings for good measure Click image to enlarge Fuel filter replacement and carb clean out next. Fuel filter changed now too. Had a battle with the rusty bolt on the bottom of the housing. Can see why they moved the position out of the direct road spray for the later models.
Luckily it was just the excuse I needed to break out the 'knackered bolt sockets' or whatever they're called. Worked a treat! Click image to enlarge Gave it a rub down and some zinc spray while I was there, noticed I need some new rubber bobbins that its mounted on but functionally its all there now. Just need to get some fuel now! Click image to enlarge Finally received my parcel from John Craddocks to finish the bonnet spare wheel mount so that's next. Next up was fitting all the bonnet spare wheel mount bits so I can use all four rear seats on occasion by moving the spare outside (didn't want it on the rear as A: didn't want aftermarket carrier and B: My garage is too short)
I don't normally get too excited about 'unboxing' but the package from Craddocks was full of lovely old Genuine Parts labels that was great to see. Have a pic: Click image to enlarge My bonnet before I started, as you can see there is already all the holes needed, currently plugged with a variety of bolts, grommets and rivets: Click image to enlarge It was nice and easy to install, only drilling out the old rivets was the most effort required so no big deal. Not sure the pedestrian safety bods will appreciate it much (they'd have lost it at the winch!) but more rustic ironmongery is a good thing in my view. I don't think pedestrian safety was ever the issue with the bonnet mounted spare, it was occupant safety in the event that you run into something hard, especially something like the back end of a truck, when Mr Spare will join you in the cab with rather unpleasant consequences.
As long as you are a sensible and defensive driver, the risk is no greater than the risk you face at any time in a Defender, at least in in my opinion. I have never worried about the bonnet mounted spare on any of my S1s. |

Blackwolf, I was thinking more about when the wheel isn't fitted therefore exposing the prongs, but you make a good point.
Shame the wheel ended up having to be moved as it gave an aerodynamic benefit on the bonnet! Instagram: L90andy My 1984 Ninety: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071.html - SOLD! My 2015 Defender: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39625.html - SOLD! |

Spent a few hours fiddling about with the carb settings to try and get it running nicely. I'm sure its running pretty rich but despite screwing in the mixture screw it doesn't seem to change much. I really don't know my way round the carb setup so will investigate local old school garages who know what they're doing to sort it for me.
This is pretty much the last thing I need to do before MOT time and would like that sorting sooner rather than later. Once its running and got a ticket it'll be time to sell! I've done everything I wanted to with this and preserved the originality of it, but moving onto a new project in the form of a more family friendly vehicle - a VW Camper! I can't keep both and need the space on the drive so this has to go, hopefully to someone who values the condition and wants to carry on being a careful guardian of it. I'll put an advert up here once I've got it sorted. Instagram: L90andy My 1984 Ninety: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071.html - SOLD!
