Having acquired a full set of early 90 County seats a while ago, see pic on page 8, it made sense to finally fit the rear individual seats while the Ninety was garage bound.
I realise sideways seats aren't the safest things around but my littlies will sit here (or the wife will while they hog the front seats) for the odd bimble around the lanes, certainly never did me any harm as a kid and part of the character of this. I did some research on seat belt options and didn't find anything particularly good for these seats, combined with it being costly to purchase 4 seat belts, not having a robust mounting method and I didn't want anything aftermarket either. So did a bit of measuring and gambled on buying a set of 110 CSW seat belt bars with genuine seat belt buckles for £60 delivered. As hoped they were a perfect fit between the bulkhead and rear light covers so that was a win Click image to enlarge However the gamble bit was that the seat back legs would clash with the bar, but only the rear most legs do. Not wanting to cut the legs nor alter the seatbelt bar I just moved the seat backs forward in car ~15mm and sunk some rivnuts into the cappings to fix them to. Click image to enlarge Once I'd determined it was all going to fit together I gave the bars a light rub down and paint, tidied up the underfloor mounting nut-plates and commenced fitting. Click image to enlarge While I was there I also made some seat box rubber covers using some spare wallpaper as a template and cut out of a roll of rubber matting I had stored away for my old 110 Utility but never used. Then dug out a new style floor mat that didn't have the 'Defender' text written on which tidies up the whole load area nicely. Once all fitted meant the final crowning glory - a nice fresh set of genuine waterproof seat covers which look the part and give a bit of practicality back Click image to enlarge The keen eyed amongst you might well ask how the two forward seats can be used with the spare wheel there and you'd be right! Click image to enlarge This is why why I got the 4 individual seats rather than benches so at least two can be used. However when I need four I'll temporarily relocate the spare to the bonnet which has already been drilled for the mount. All I had to do was buy the bracketry for it, at this point I learnt there were two versions of 90/110 bonnet mount as discovered by buying the wrong one first so still waiting on parts But that's another few jobs ticked off, nice strong genuine belts all fitted together nicely! In the master plan of replacing the suspension I thought while access was good I'd replace the intermediate and rear exhaust pipes but that plan quickly went south when the new intermediate pipe I bought didn't fit between my existing downpipe and centre muffler due to different sized ends. All credit to Britcar who ran round measuring their stock items of both to see where my incompatibility came from. In the end I had to replace the downpipe too.
Getting the downpipe off filled me with dread of snapped studs, rounded nuts etc but it came off without much of a fight after a liberal soaking of penetrating fluid and once access was improved with the removal of heatshields and washer bottle. Click image to enlarge You can see in the pics my old downpipe had a larger flange than the new one which is why it didn't fit together. Click image to enlarge Assembling it all back together was a bit of a faff, trying to get all the joints lined up and providing sufficient clearance to other components. Got there in the end though and hopefully all the exhaust paste I smothered on will stop any possible leaks. Not entirely happy about how the pipe comes through the mudflap bracket but will see how it all works once warm and may have to adjust later. Today is a big day as I'm trying to get it to a useable state for our village VE Day celebrations tomorrow, so now I've shifted the sand that was blocking the garage (see patio above ) I'll be getting it out and giving it a good wash and test drive, plus pics of course Instagram: L90andy My 1984 Ninety: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56071.html - SOLD! After all this work the first use was intended to be the village VE Day celebrations, so having finishing the exhaust I rolled it out the garage for a check over in daylight for the first time in over a year.
Firstly the newly lifted suspension was just about compatible with my garage door modifications as there was about 10mm clearance It sat idling while I torqued up the suspension bolts and then it promptly ran out of fuel, so a quick blast in the daily upto the petrol station for a can full saw it running again. Enough waffle, have lots of pics; Click image to enlarge Got the lad to clean it. Click image to enlarge I then popped the canvas roof back on and gave it a light polish, looking just right to my eyes! Click image to enlarge Shake down drive commenced and the brakes felt very soft, it was fine when previously used so will have to look into that. Suspension changes were a success though, the ride vastly improved. Click image to enlarge So to VE Day, we decorated it accordingly and had our picnic in the back and it was great! Like a mobile picnic machine. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Lad discovered it has inbuilt cupholders Click image to enlarge Dog used it as a sun shade Click image to enlarge Took it out for a quick spin to get some pics Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Great day, all the better because the whole family were involved and really enjoyed using it. This is exactly the sort of weekend fun I had in mind when I originally got it so now the whole family are enthused about it I'll carry on tinkering until its running perfectly. Looks like immediate jobs will be to investigate the spongy brakes, then get the carb/ignition fettled, then replace the rusty fuel tank. As always plenty to go at! Thanks chaps, I'm really enjoying this thing so hopefully its of interest to others too
I did some quick problem diagnosis on the brakes which went something like this; repeatedly pump the pedal with the engine off to see if servo pressure builds up, it didn't and then heard a hissing noise underneath front o/s wheel. Stick head underneath to see brake fluid has been spraying out. Yep, the flexi hose has split, guess I over-extended it when replacing the spring I've ordered a set of goodridge braided hoses so will replace them all and do a system flush while I'm at it as god knows when it was last done. These old Ninety soft tops are great fun in the summer.
Click image to enlarge My advice, especially if you've had a rusty petrol tank and haven't done it already, is to buy the best quality fuel filter you can, and fit it immediately in front of the carb. The Weber carbs on these 2.3 petrol engines are highly intolerant of the slightest dirt in the fuel system. I've been dumped at the roadside a few times! |
