Its a really tricky one. If it ain't broke don't fix it. But it is also an accident waiting to happen. One thing is for sure and that is that a tyre shop won't repair it as its too close too the edge

I'd be looking mostly at exactly where the tip of the screw has gone.
Looking at it from what I can see, it looks like you have JUST got away with it. MT / AT tyre's have thick sidewalls and banding / cords, so I very very much doubt there is any air leakage. I bought a spare wheel and tyre from Blanchards (deals in ex MOD stuff) and found a bullet casing embedded at roughly 45 degrees. My initial thought was that the tyre was definitely gone so I let the air out and yanked it out with a pair of mole grips. Casing came out, was nearly 2 inches in length and left a good sized hole in the tyre. Convinced it had gone through, I pumped the tyre back up and was amazed to find it held pressure!
However, judging by the pictures, the screw looks at a much more shallow angle so as above, you might be OK and hence I would probably be inclined to leave it. Matt. '89 90 CSW with a 3.5 V8 conversion (WIP) - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic46809.html |

That's great thanks, appreciate all your advice.
I'm going to monitor the tyre pressure and keep a good eye on it. Hopefully it'll be ok. Just wanted to make sure it didn't look too dodgy in other peoples opinions! A bullet casing would be pretty impressive though  |

That's through the tread only! My advice would be to remove the screw asap before movement and wear forces it into the carcass. Formerly mao99999

Just unscrewed the screw (only way to get it out) and thankfully when looking at my original photo and a photo of the screw held up next to the tyre I can see from the dents on the screw pattern that just the end nib was poking into the tread.
 Click image to enlarge Tyre pressure is still exactly as before, will keep an eye on it just in case! Appreciate all your help! Not been green lining recently I'm afraid, just normal road driving, nowhere I'd expect to pick up a nail more than usual either. |
