United Kingdom 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Barolo Black
Limp home mode.
My 2008 110 Pick Up goes into Limp mode every now and then.
I cannot identify when it will happen.
I have changed the air mass sensor and I have run the engine through with cleaning agents in the fuel.
I have fitted KBX air ducts to the top wings
I have had the car plugged into a LR computor and it comes up clear.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hello, sorry you are having trouble. I can not help but can I ask what is the purpose of KBX air duct?
Is this recommended to help prevent trouble like limp problems?

Hi,

I've had similar features Very Happy .

First question, do you have aircon? Then it can be (most likely) a temperature problem. Try reading the temperature whilst driving to see if that is the case. For some reason the temp can spike suddenly to 109/110 degrees and it goes into limp mode with no faults stored.

If this is the case there are 2 reasonable cheap ways (for the links see below) to correct this and one expensive,a new allisport radiator.

I know Rolling with laughter it can also be the egr valve. If it doesn't open or closes fully during testing it will also go into limp mode but normally you will get an dtc, but not allways.

I know too that it can be the wire harness to the turbo, but normally you get a dtc code as well

I know, also from experience, that it can be a leak in the turbo hose (can be a very small one). But normally you get that more frequent. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

I don't think so, an EGR issue will light up the amber MIL (check engine) on the dash, but won't trigger the limp mode.

Then my mil light must be broken Laughing That explains a lot.

All jokes aside, this is a current problem I'm having. So it is possible to have problems with the egr valve without the mil light coming on, but going into limp mode. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

If i get an error code, it's P0404. But I don't get it all the time a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

A P0404 won't cause a limp mode, and won't even light up the MIL, it's an untested DTC

Fault Code Definition

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance
What does this mean?
NOx gases, which cause acid rain and respiratory problems, are formed when the engine's combustion temperature is too high (2500 F). EGR systems are used to reduce the combustion temperature, thus reducing NOx formation. EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-Circulation) systems are used to reduce the combustion temperature, thus reducing NOx formation.
Code P0404 means that the EGR Valve Position Sensor is reading above or below the specified range.
Symptoms

Check Engine Light will illuminate
In many cases, there may be performance problems, such as pinging on acceleration, when the engine is under load or when driving the vehicle at higher speeds
In some cases, there are no adverse conditions noticed by the driver


In my case no mil light and definitely performance problems a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Sounds like your EGR is stuck open. EGR issues rarely light up the check engine light but they do come out on the OBD diagnostics. Try having your EGR cleaned, if it still doesn't work, it must be replaced. This is what I think.

EGR fault can trigger both the MIL light coming on + engine going into safe mode at the same time.
Happened a few times to my Puma 2.4 when it was only abt 6 months old.
Dealer diagnosed it was a faulty EGR, which was replaced, and now 8 years forward all remains very good.
