Gearbox oil..recommendations please.
Evening all, I have just recently had the oil pump replaced on my 2.2 Defender and was hoping to change the gear oil as well.
The gearbox would appear to be slightly overfilled with a red coloured oil in the main gearbox, approx 3.5lt.
An independent garage in my neighbourhood has suggested replacing like for like, as the overfilled box with this slightly more viscous red oil will aid gear change and make for a quieter gearbox.

And suggestion in the above, or indeed which type of oil this is would really be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance....l

I would talk to Opie Oils on this forum, I think they are a site sponser and gurus for all things oily 👍

Although I could be wrong, Red oil suggests that they have put ATF in it Shocked

Really the factory spec is a Castrol BOT 130 but many on here including myself have used Castrol Syntrans 75W-90 I got mine from opie oils as linked the refil amount is 2.2 litres although after having the wrong stuff in there I would be inclined to at least once do a drain and refil to flush it out.

Although ATF isn't recomended for the MT82, some manual gearboxes do use it, so i don't think it'll do much real harm in the short term

Comma do a gear oil to the right spec too.

A whiles back I compared the specifications of the syntrans type with the BOT 130 and came out wondering if they were the same thing. Perhaps just a small additive or two difference?

I've been running for the last year on it anyways, works for me Thumbs Up Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Thanks guys for the prompt replies, The gearbox would appear to be using a Redline MT90 gl4 oil, which on some of the Mustang forums, have mixed reviews.

As suggested , i will check in with the chaps in Opie oils, as this particular oil is on their stock list.

It was more the fact that even today a garage is able to put the wrong oil in. Next the OP will be telling us that the garage didn't use a C1 specific oil just any old 5W-30 or even 5W-40 they had on the shelf.

Just go to a Landrover dealer and buy 3L of the proper Castrol stuff - those puma gearboxes don't like anything else.

I replaced the Castrol stuff with the Motul equivalents, based on good feedback from Oz.

Both gearbox & transfer case run more smoothly and not as hot either.

Naks, is there any reason you opted for semi-synthetic for the transfer case when you went for fully synthetic in the gearbox?

I only ask because I have just bought Motul Gear 300 for both gearbox and transfer case and just want to make sure I wasn't about to make a mistake! 2015 110 Defender Heritage Utility Station Wagon

I was doing some homework on stiff gearchanges in a cold box and theres a ford service bulletin about replacing the fluid to something called dual clutch fluid.

maybe that's what you've got?

Devon 4x4 put ATF in my MT82 box. Better on the syncos apparently. Feels fine to me. Think its Fuchs Titan ATF 4000..... 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.

I recall discussion about some material in the MT82 not liking standard oils and degrading over time.

i.e. what might feel fine might not be best over time... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
