IN NEED OF SOME HELP/ ADVICE
Hello all,

Having a bad week, so from the start.

Driving along I notice a clonk when taking up drive, drive around with this clonk until I get a free moment to diagnose.
Next minuet no drive at all. Driving along and its like its gone in to neutral, now I cant move at all. everything seams to be working fine, just sounds like im revving my car in neutral.

Had a look at the linkages, shafts ect cant find any. Could this be the clutch plate? I would of thought i would of know about it, if it was clutch related.

Anyone have any ideas. Im clueless.

Cheers!

That's assuming you have a Puma Defender of course? No Guts, No Glory.

Put it in diff lock and see if that gets you mobile. That will indicate whether the fault is before the transfer box or not. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

If it's a Puma model, get under and have a look for some red dust around the little hole where the output shaft is. If yes, then pretty sure it's blown it's splines and you need to get one from Ashcroft.

If shouting at it doesnt work, and you have tried diff lock, then it would seem to be gearbox or tbox related... unless the clutch plate has exploded? does the clutch seem like its working, does the gear lever engage and disengage without using the clutch even with it in gear and the engine running? V8 90...WIP

Axle drive flanges Im betting. If the diff lock light isn't coming on the rods could be stiff/seized from little to no use. Ray

Tried shouting, and the occasional abuse.
Im thinking its clutch plate related, I can change gear when running without pressing the clutch peddle. If it was the clutch plate would I of heard anything when it happened? As it just stopped silently. Dont know if the clonk i have when taking up drive had anything to do with this?

Are you sure it's not just dropped out of high range? That could have been the clunk Ray

The best way is to put it in diff lock. You could try working the lever till it eventually frees the rods, and if you have any wd40 or simillar you can spray the rods if you get under from the drivers side. Ray

Put it in gear with the engine running, brakes on, and look underneath (or get someone else to look underneath). If one propshaft is turning, then the fault is in the diff or axle at that end (front prop turning = front axle fault, rear prop = rear axle). In this case engaging diff lock will give you drive (the fact you're not getting the diff lock light suggests that the lock is not engaging, perhaps due to a seized linkage).

If neither propshaft is turning, you have a transfer box, gearbox, or clutch fault, or, if you're really lucky, the t-box has jumped into neutral.

Sad nothing happening underneath, so it looks like your suspicions on clutch/tbox are right. Think its going to be a garage job.
Is there anyway to see if its suck in neutral?
