So managed to snatch a couple of hours to add some bits to my 90.
Finished off fitting the glove box kit which I had to stop because it was too dark on Friday when I was rushing to finish. Next ; needed to do a simple job before the rugby started. Decided to fit the locking spare wheel kit I bought last weekend from Brennan at Donington. I have Bowler wheels so I removed the wheel nut cap & undid the locking wheel nut. 3/4hrs of an hour later I still hadn't been able to get the other two wheel nut caps off the spare wheel. I have tried wiggling. I have tried jiggling.I have done a lot of swearing & I no further forward. Two simple wheel cap nuts & there is absolutely no room whatsoever to get them off my Bowler wheel. I will get them off. However, I am very concerned that I have 4 other wheels that each have a wheel nut cap on & at the present rate of progress l am dreading having to contemplate doing this st the side of the road at night. Anyone else had this problem? Guy May your life be like toilet paper ; long & useful. |

Definitely caps.
I took the one off the locking wheel nut for a start..... And I can wiggle them but can't get behind them to hook them out Guy May your life be like toilet paper ; long & useful. |

But do they have the indent like Greeni says? The normal wheel nuts are capped but the caps don't come off. Ray

I changed my wheel nuts today for black ones and had 3 different types to deal with which confused me (doesnt take much) see picture below. Had 4 wheel nuts with a raised pimple?? Click image to enlarge All three types in the end got the same treatment a socket on an impact wrench even though the caps moved prior to this I couldnt pull them off as you described so put the socket on them and spun them and off they came, if you dont have an impact wrench a socket on a long bar will take longer but will do it too. 2015 HT XS 90 2008 SVX 90 2000 XS TD5 90 |

Because the Bowler wheels have quite a deep recess there is no room down the side of the cap to get in & then behind the cap.
I have tried drilling a hole in the cap & then trying to get a Snap On hook probe & that won't work. I am trying not to damage my wheel so I can't do anything much more invasive at the moment but when I get the caps off l will need to look at something else instead of these poxy caps. As said above if they have the indent then use the same wheel nut socket on a long bar and as you undo them it should break any corrosion and the cap will come off. Ray

I was surprised how the corrosion held the caps in place and thought first of all they were ordinary wheel nuts fingers crossed the long bar and socket works to break the corrosion holding them. 2015 HT XS 90

Guy, I have to agree with the lads. The standard alloy wheel nuts also have caps on them....that aren't meant to be removed. They do, however sound loose when you get hold of them. Unlike the locking wheel nut cap, they have a convex top to them.

OK chaps
For the avoidance of all doubt At the moment I am trying to get my spare off. I recently bought a set of brand new Bowlers & tyres via my local tyre dealer. I have removed the cap from the locking wheel nut & I can remove this wheel nut. I have a full workshop of all sorts of tools..... A 27mm socket does not fit. A 28mm socket spins on the cap & I cannot get it to bite. The Bowlers have a deep recess which is higher on the rim side as opposed to the hub side. There is NO room to get down the side of the cap. The caps have indents in the top & they are silver in colour. They feel like caps & they certainly don't feel part of the actual Wheel nut. I have not tried a pneumatic impact wrench on it. As far as I am concerned it's a cap on a nut that is held in place around it's rim . Suitably frustrated by a seemingly simple problem! Guy May your life be like toilet paper ; long & useful. |

Photos may help.
You can have swollen nuts Basically Defender nuts can 'swell' (from abuse) and a standard 6 sided socket would struggle to fit on and a multi sided socket will probably and can fit over It seems you're confident they ARE covers over locking wheel nuts. So are you saying ALL the nuts are locking on your motor, or just the spare? If its ALL, it's likely there should be more 'key' sockets Blindos suffer the same buried deep nuts I threw my locking covers in the bin and used lashings of acf on the lockers I used a socket and spun off the covers, so I know how you can't get down the sides... |

Thats odd the 27mm doesnt fit but a 28mm spins. I think if it was me Id be going back to the local tyre dealer you purchased them from to see how he takes them off because as you say imagine if you have a puncture on the roadside!! Sorry cant be of more help. 2015 HT XS 90

Yes definitely swollen nuts, try knocking the smaller socket on with a nylon hammer and undoing them with a breaker bar Ray
