Td5 not starting and smoking
Hi all my defender td5 was ticking over today when all of a sudden it started to misfire then cut out it was quiet low on fuel, so I put £20 in a Jerry can but would still not start.
After cranking over for ages it started but was smoking really bad,I have not driven this in a while only up and down the road.
Can any body point me in the direction of sorting it out?
So far I have recently change oil filters oil including diesel fuel filter and genuin Maf sensor.
The only thing I have noticed when you first start it up it want Rev for about 10 seconds but then it's fine.
Cheers Ash

Have you tried the fuel purge? If not try pumping the accelerator 7 or 8 times until the mil light starts flashing then let the purge run until it finishes and try starting the defender again. Ray

Hi cacuts79 thank for the reply here are my answers below.

Oil level high? Normal
Oil smell of diesel No
Fuel pump noisy? A little
Oil in Red ECU plug? No
Diesel down the back right of engine? No Looks like a new fuel regulater fitted.
Make of fuel filter? MAHLE

Got it to run breifley but it's smoking and running like a bag of s*it also sounds it's misfiring and loads of smoke.

If the smoke burns your eyes then it's unburnt diesel which means probably air in system, blockage on the return or dead injector given no fuel in oil.

You can either pull injector plug of each injector in turn or put on diagnostics to confirm.

Thanks for the reply cacuts79 I have had my nano com plugged in and it shows not faults but I must admit I am a complete novice with it Laughing
I have took a picture of the injector readings below

Could it be the injector seals?

If its not starting you are into a bigger issue with either multiple cylinders or fuel pressure problems.

Can you get a video with fuel pump noise?

If the fuel pump sounds noisey I'd go for injector seals and washers which can make it really hard to start in my experience Ray

Cylinder imbalance values only really valid when it's settled at idle. While cranking I'd expect them to be all over the shop.

Here is a video of the fuel pump and starting issue.
I placed the phone on the drivers side rear wheel so it nearer to the fuel pump.

thanks Ash
