Sorry to read that one or two of you are having problems with the slick shift. I
I have several thousand miles on mine since fitting it, and it still doesnīt rattle or communicate any noise up from the gearbox. However, it did to begin with. When i originally fitted it, I followed the video, but without greasing the top of the shaft (I wish I could find another way to express that). With the lever fitted dry, I immediately notice a noise on the first test run. Very similar to the sound of the well documented loose weights on the lever. I tried wrapping electrical tape around the shaft at various heights, and eventually found that it only needed about two rounds at the bottom. See pic. That done, no further issues. ![]() Click image to enlarge If that doesnīt successfully "exorcise" the rattle, then try a second round further up. Just for the sake of experiment, I īve just tried fitting a second single round of tape, and discovered that this is about as far up the shaft as it will go. Any further up and you wont get the lever down far enough for the clips to engage. ![]() Click image to enlarge I hope this helps. For anyone who has a problem with the shift action being to heavy (engaging reverse), I might be able to help there too. Iīll post some pictures over the weekend. I've had the dreaded Slick Shift Grub Screw failure on my 110.
My gear stick spins on its axis. And before anyone accuses me, Yes I did apply Red permanent lock tight to the Grub Screw. I think I got about 5000kms out of it before the failure. I'm going to get the assembly welded together as I don't want this giving way again in the bush. I wonder why this occurs so much? Perhaps the Grub Screw is a fraction too small compared to the internal thread? My assembly was verbatim from the You Tube installation video. A great mod when working correctly. Ken |

I haven't had the lever come loose on mine, but can imagine it is mighty inconvenient if it does. My guess is that the problem originates from the two parts not quite being lined up quite right when assembled by the workshop/customer. They are an extremely tight fit. The grub screw is then pulled up tight, but only touch the inner shaft on one side of the designated recess. Then in use, the. combination of temperature and several hundred shifts is enough to make the lever float back and forth, slowly working away at the locktited screw. As you apparently experience, once loosened, the original interference fit is gone.
It would have made more sense for those two parts to be pre-assembled for the appropriate left or right hand drive application, by the manufacturer. My suggestion to anyone fitting a fresh kit is to apply a little grease or light oil between the two shaft beforehand so they can fully line up when the grub screw is tightened. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

Hi Wild Card;
Your right re the option to purchase dedicated left or right hand drive units. It would have removed the chance of failures like I've experienced. I was very careful to correctly align the shafts so as to maximise contact of the Grub Screw with the inner shaft dimple. I was aware of this failure before purchase, and read up on the issue, even discussed it with Shabs prior to purchase. Oh well, welding the unit will fix it for good. Best wishes mate. There you go, the fix for a loose Slick Shift.
I ran a bead around it with the MIG. Reassembled and good as new, with a firmer shift action if possible. Best wishes all. Ken ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Ken,
thats how it should be done! Nice workmanship! The fact that others have experienced similar, and your shifter came loose after 5000 Kms has me thinking....Iīll go and check that grub screw on mine again. Good on you Stephen.
Re checking yours, I wouldn't worry about it unless it plays up. As they say, don't fix what ain't broke! Best wishes mate. Ken |

That is exactly what I have done (run a bead of weld around the stem and where the grub screw goes) today prior to installation.
The shift is certainly shorter and slicker and whilst I didn't have a serious problem with mine, it is much improved. |

Hi Jeff.
I'd be disappointed if it did! It's amazing though, how much firmer my Shift has become. I don't know if it's the minor change in geometry or the different grease I used. Happy with my gear shift action either way. Best wishes mate. Ken |

Just picked up the Puma from my indie, who fitted the Slickshift - wow!!!
The gearchanges are short, snappy, precise and so much smoother. Liam
Do you know if it is the same type of design as the slick shift? if so, take it apart, get it welded and refit. |
